I always wanted to try DF, but sadly each time I tried, the horrid interface was always there to scare me away.

The whole DF project is pretty amazing. It seems like they're not so much building a game as putting together a program that creates the world in which the game emerges organically. That's what I love about it. On a large scale, it's basically a framework for these little social AI creatures interacting with each other. Sometimes you get gems of stories that seem like they had to have been written, but when you go down to the nuts and bolts, every action taken is dictated by the predispositions and limitations of the individual actors in the game. Their motivations are always consistent. It's the variety of those predispositions and the range of responses available to the actors that lets the game spin interesting stories by itself. Some of that stuff shows up in the history files when you generate a new world.

When you're just dicking around with your fort, you tend not to notice it. And yeah, sometimes the UI (or lack therof) gets in the way... personally, my greatest hurdle comes when I have to build my militia. But slogging through the military/squad panels can be really rewarding once you get your army humming along, going on patrols and training properly. I started playing before the graphics packs were any good, and now I'm far too accustomed to the ASCII interface to change my ways. I like being able to zoom way out and still read what's going on.

I seem to recall a promise of a military UI overhaul, the ability to send armies out on campaigns against other civilizations or sites, and maybe even the option of joining those campaigns as a soldier in adventure mode. Was any of that stuff added?

I made a dumb little DF comic years ago, back when trees were 1 z-level objects:

I had small stage when I felt that my fortresses weren't fun except if I half-intentionally caused a big flood or something similar. But soon after my forts started to be fun again. I guess that I just didn't play long enough in those non-fun times.

Same thing used to happen to me, until I found the Lazy Newb pack. I changed the visuals to something that would help me understand the game better, and I also used the Dwarf therapist, it helped me out tremendously. I kept on getting stuck while playing the game so I looked up tutorials online. Currently, the only things I am not understanding properly(which makes me want to either reset the game or stop playing), is how to build an army, Advanced farming(animals) and how to get into metalwork's. I also have been wanting to explore the underworld(area before the clowns appear) but since I lack a military in any way I just block it off.

It truly is, I have lurked a bunch in their forums and read their stories and the things the game comes up with makes me want to play, and read more stories. I have read from the types of mega beasts and the problems that come from them. From how a woman brought her baby with her everywhere, including battles which once the baby grew up he became a prodigy in combat.
