Freeform, very similar to Haven.
You select from a set of preset building options, some of which are modular and some of which are prefabricated, and place them into the world with full rotation and either grid snap enabled or disabled.
Many object entities which aren't actual "buildings", things like tanning tubs, drying racks, bears head trophies, can also be manipulated along the Z axis.
Some of these unrestricted objects are pseudo-buildings, like a literal slab of stone, which I have seen players use enmasse to make custom constructions like bridges across waterways or ravines.
They are just as permanent as buildings, albeit much more difficult to assemble and disassemble (unless you are destroying them in sieges, then they take damage just like any other object entity, and with AOE siege weaponry, you can take chunks out of these.)

Once placed, there is a placeholder area where you load the materials into. You can press a "build" button to commit the resources to the building either once you have them all, or partially so they can't be removed from the site, just like Haven.

Some constructions, basically all the prefabbed buildings, have unfinished foundations that look like actual construction areas where materials are stored:

Others are really odd, I wonder where they got this idea from:

It's a market rule, if you want to make a big game you need a lot of money selling a lot ...so you have to make a game that appeal a lot of people.
And most of the people is superficial, they buy a game only cause it looks good...in short: commercial products, thought for massive people, but that lacks in effective quality, cause they spend their money trying to appeal people to buy the game not trying to build a game that provides truely entertainment. That's why we'll never see big games, good looking and depth gameplay together. It's very rare, and non existent on the MMO sandbox side.

P.S.RTS side Wargame is a good example: good looking, techinically perfect and even a great gameplay depth...i guess this is possible cause it's a RTS game...MMO sandbox require much more developing, so combining all this goodies, right now, it's impossible. We'll see in the future.

You also think he has no depth to him?

Gathering is shit

Combat is clunky and I wouldnt call it skill-based even though you have to aim

Repetitive actions

Traveling the boring map on a boring server with no other players

Struggling with the camera locking and unlocking onto place

....

You would be better off playing darkfall rise of agon or gloria victus (which also sorta sucks but movement and combat is nicer and simpler than darkfall)

If you have only played LiF circa October-December 2014, I'd agree a lot of this is true.

1. I find myself enjoying the gathering, I'm not sure what to say about this - Did you play since the 2015 Crafting overhaul?
2. Combat has been vastly improved, both in smoothness/responsiveness and in metagame. I'd highly suggest trying it again.
3. Repetitive actions are now almost universally auto-repeating, so you don't need to perform the same acts over and over.
4. There are tons of active servers if you play YO where active players will be a couple minutes in all directions. On the MMO, that's yet to be seen, it could be quite haven-esque in terms of its travel time to reach other players if there is a haven-esque level of population. That said, with 400k LiF:YO copies sold, it's reasonable to imagine that the MMO will achieve at least some level of popularity that will result in thousands of concurrent players.
5. Have you played since the engine overhaul to Dx11? The GUI and Camera are amazing now.

I'd agree that the game had serious faults back in October 2014, but if you've played recently the level of polish is almost AAA, and the core gameplay has improved considerably as they have gone through multiple iterations of some of the core features.

I don't know if now they have improved it, but it was exactly like yours, prefab but no pocket world.
If you did't know they are trying to make a H&H copy in 3d person with good looking graphic, this is the concept of that game. Honestly would be amazing but they didn't succeed at all untill now, we'll see in the future.

Played a while ago

Can give it another chance if the camera alone is fixed

Was a huge dealbreaker at the time

There's a lot more modular and terraforming options :D
Working in 3 dimensions also allows you to create pretty crazy things.

Maybe they were paid for it.

Yeah for sure it's good looking but i guess it will never have that magic feeling that H&H has.
This is the difference between games developed to sell and make money (commercial games like LiF) and games made for passion cause devs love what they are doing (H&H).
I hope they (J&L) will never be forced to compromise the game cause the money thing.

Cool stuff, but how big of a pain in the dick is terraforming?
And is there a decent leveling tool?

Also, building-mode servers? Or is it all vanilla
