If noone was using custom clients the game will be much better....being able to see behind stuff, etc.. it's for sure not good for the game.
Your story is so nice and funny cause you were using the default client that allow "magic" things to happen....using custom breaks totally all that magic ( i already tried to explain this, but i guess i'm not very successfull to comunicate what i mean in english)

Remembering such nice stories you should consider to come back to default client....i mean, the game is always amazing, but i guess you will not have such nice adventures using custom anymore.
So, as veteran player, you should set a good example for the community.
P.S. I'm trying, but i guess i will not be successful in this fight....btw i like how devs slowly are improving the client, maybe one day we can switch back this trend.....and it will be a great day.

Nice try ... ... but no, I don't consider it not showing a good example, the default client is bad, I mean I'm glad you like it, don't get me wrong and if I had never tried a custom client, and I played for almost a year in legacy without one, I would ofc still be playing ... but I did and the difference is life changing, lol, and I don't even use even half of the features, I've never once used the hide button in new haven as you don't need to with bad cam and the landscape is pretty. I don't use the auto features.

Actually, I can't lie ... .... I did try the auto levelling after some players I know kept raving on about it and it was amazing!
But ... I felt incredibly guilty after all I've said about not using them and I stopped. I dream about it though ...

But in other ways it does make a huge difference to the flow of your game play and for me in understanding anything Jorb does that involve numbers ...

I do occasionally actually play on default, rarely I admit, but I do, there are a couple of things I do like about it and I agree they are improving it but overall, after a couple of hours, it just makes me grateful for Romovs. (And Enders.)

Now stop trying to convert me!

There was one time, I think in W7 or 5 or so, where I had invaded someone's property and was stealing things. At one point, for some odd reason, I couldn't go onto the claim anymore. I thought this was odd, and tried toggling criminal acts. I eventually noticed, to my surprise, laughter, and horror, that my HHP was completely drained down to 1 HHP. I don't exactly remember how I healed up, but I thankfully don't remember that character dying.

You know, you don't need to stick to default to enjoy the game's immersion. If you've seen my thread (Wulf's Retreat), you'll notice that most of the time I'm playing without lines/visual stuff, without nightvision, etc...
You can toggle it all off and enjoy the immersive feeling, the wilderness, the pretty light effects, the red sunrises and purple twilights, the flickering of fire against the blue of the night...

You don't need to stick to default to enjoy all of that. And all the other interesting resources in custom clients are nice to have and useful, even for "not hardcore" reasons - like tile centering is great for treeplanting and decoration, being able to show grid and bounding boxes is essential to decorate places, place buildings and stuff, create beautiful environments and all that. I must say a lot of my work - and a lot of everyone's beautiful works and towns created within the game - wouldn't have been possible with just the default client's tools.

So it's not that bad.
It's about getting the best of both worlds. When I go outside or around dangerous areas, boating around, etc... Yes, I do like to have bounding boxes or lines show, etc... because if anyone tries to harm me, we'll at least have equal chances to survive since I will have the necessary information/resources to navigate better and all that.
But most of the time, when just building my stuff and enjoying my place, or taking a walk nearby, etc... Yes, I do play with a mostly "default" game visually... because I like it and printscreens are horrible with nightvision

So it's not really about default x custom clients but more about people's attitude towards those things; what they do with what they have available to them - and why
So don't draw your line so harshly there's always a lot of good and bad in both sides of a coin. Smartest are the people that can see both (like Amanda and others have told you )

Also, to not derail, I have to share what was probably one of my most noobish moments ever:

Back in early W7 I shared the little place I was living in with a guy called "Yuyui" or something like that. Can't really remember now. I had started the game not long ago and was still learning a lot of things.
Yuyui, however, was an "experienced" player (or so he told me). He used to hang around with a ranger's cloak and to travel for days, telling me he was "ranging", looking for scents and all that. Alright.
One day, he was dead. He created a new character and came back home, saying he was so angry because some guy outsmarted him, and he would have his revenge. We played for a while before he set out again, after getting some gear and skills back, saying he was ready for his revenge (lol).
A few days passed and a linen noob (back when we started the game with linen clothes, lol) came by and started to check out my place.
I tried to talk to him and he wasn't responsive, and then I had the stupid idea of asking "Yuyui, is that you?". I thought the guy had died and spawned again, and this guy smartly replied "Yes, it's me" lol.
And I kept like asking questions "Oh no, you died again?" and he was like "oh yes, it was terrible" LOL
And I totally bought it! I mean, I did ask him about the sudden name change but since Yuyui completely changed his name on his first death, that wasn't so disturbing.

... lol
I brought him in and gave all the perms and all that...
The next morning my place was more empty than my head A runestone was left "I'm not yuyui, SORRY" lol.

I can understand your view....i can even partially agree with you. But the point is that custom clients are not respectfull of the game design.
Not being able to see some stuff or accomplish others is part of the game, how is thought to be played. I'm agree that can be improved a lot and maybe in the future it will eventually happen, at least i hope.
Btw i don't want to annoy talking again about, i simply think that customs are not good for the game (I mean that when i say customs are bad)....so better don't use them at all trying to dismantle this trend (cause, again, i think it's not good for the game).
Maybe one day i could investigate how custom works and try to make one that is a bit more respectfull of the game design (some inventory organization,shortcuts and stuff like that), but tbh i don't feel the need....after a while you came back to default from custom you get used to it pretty well.
