Are we playing the same game? It's just clay and rocks.

Lot of clay and rocks.
If you are going to build lot of them on one time, you will have to walk far far away for clay. Digging up clay takes time, transporting that clay near the designated place for tarpit takes time. Getting and transferring the stones takes a lot of time and effort too. Its just a huge amount of work that goes to constructing even one of them.

A boat load of clay and an inventory of rocks doesn't seem like all that much given their size. And you've only got to do it as many times as you upgrade them for quality. IE, relative to the rest of the game, not that often.

Assuming 5 minutes travel time per load (a pretty low estimate), an inventory space of 25 (verified acct with leather backpack carrying a waterskin and a key), and approximate harvest times of 1 sec per clay and 2 sec per stone, it takes 2.5 hours to gather resources for 8 kilns. The vast majority of that time is in travel, so a more accurate (and probably higher) number will change the final time dramatically. That doesn't include construction time.
I think it's made of bubbles and hate.

2.5 hours during the early game rush is a huge amount of time in my opinion. You guys are asking people to have prepared themselves for something that you don't really even consider until you start the mining process and there's so many other things going on and being worked on when you first start out and you want everyone to take 2.5 hours out of their game time to build some fucking tar kilns so they don't run out of coal?

I'll tell you guys what happens when you build a minehole down to coal as well, you mine it out in like 1 fucking hour if you're lucky and then you "cannot even scratch" the rest of the rock/ore that's down there. A pickaxe and 40ish strength should be plenty enough in the early game to mine most L1 areas as well and yet I'm struggling with that too.

So yeah, coal shortage is a legitimate issue and mining sucks this world big time.

Well, yeah if they want to have unlimited coal, otherwise a single or two tar kilns will be enough metal for a hermit.

I love that they have changed it to be this way, slower progression is a good thing imo
