“We analyzed a half-century worth of research on intelligence and chess skill and found that cognitive ability contributes meaningfully to individual differences in chess skill.”

Contrarian as always I see.
My main point is simply that chess is not significantly different from another game like League of Legends, in that time spent studying and practicing the game itself brings you knowledge that is really only applicable to that game, and is something that cannot be circumvented by pure cognitive ability.
You said one thing and meant another. How am I to know you don't mean what you say? Chess skill is correlated with intelligence, it just is. Does that mean a very intelligent person will ever beat a very experienced player? No.
