Well, if it makes you feel any better, we dropped atomic bombs on our own soil and let the fallout rain down on our own people--civilians, not military. And worth noting our thermonuclear tests not on our own soil were over "open water" of the Marshall Islands... at least that's what has been declassified. Once the treaties were in place about open-air testing, we used the Nevada deserts (though that still didn't prevent dust clouds of radioactive material from drifting around, at least one of which drifted into Mexico).
And if anything, high energy levels create ozone, especially large fluxes of electrons (such as with a fusion reaction) through oxygen, so no... it was mostly just the chemicals we were using in common products like Styrofoam and such that caused the ozone issues in the upper atmosphere.
