To be fair it was the forum dwellers complaining about empty world. When they asked on stream what type of world people want, the responses were overwhelmingly in favour of bigger world.

The problem is that your play experience is almost entirely decided on luck in terms of if you ended up near people who have no qualms about raiding and destroying other bases versus people who just mind their own business and leave others alone. It's not like the entire world is filled with one or the other so I wouldn't be surprised to hear of success stories here or there. But I do think the "average" hermit experience this world is going to be much lower quality than previous worlds.

You can explore around your intended base and see what other groups are setting up camp. This is why it took me a while to find a good spot, there were a lot of groups I didn't feel comfortable settling near. The aggressive ones generally don't hide their presence.

Personally I'm finding this world to be much worse on in these first few days because there's just people fucking everywhere. Like no matter where you decide to place your claim there's about 5 other people/groups within a 10-20 minutes walking distance away. Security by obscurity doesn't work when everyone spawns on the central continent and there's no where you can go that isn't combed over by people. Kind of sucks as a hermit because trying to rush a palisade is hard to do when you got to count on essentially 24-36 hours of hoping no one comes in to steal your shit before you get a non-easily destroyable wall up.

But I'll power through for now.

I saw loads of stuff going on, ran up against ocean for a while, figured I'd say "screw it" and plop down somewhere with a decent variety of resources.
What wound up happening is I started my camp right near:

-a person settled next to the end of a river
-a person settled on a peninsula on the coast
-a number of failed attempts at settling around a swamp/clay

I think I'm going to be alright simply by being surrounded by more convenient, wealthier targets. One of my neighbours seems friendly enough, it will be sad when he's raided by someone on watercraft larger than a rowboat

This is not fun at all. Spent hours looking for place to start just to be robbed and my claim and stuff destroyed multiple times. Everyone on same continent was horrible idea and totally break the game. There are people that play this for like 12 hours a day with multiple characters and accounts and I got no time to rival that. I was really up to play this world and now I am so disappointed.
