Unless there is a reason not to kill people for giggles, people will go for the giggles.

Ashes of creation might be the first mmo with nonconsenual pvp that doesnt self cannabilise its population, because the penalties for killing someone who doesnt fight back are so extreme that its almost never worth it.

I doubt ashes of creation will have a very active PVP scene because of it, and the reason why is because people who gank newbies are the majority of pvpers in any pvp video game and they don't gank newbies for interesting pvp content. They do it because they have no lives and have to feel better about the amount of time they have sunk into the game by manufacturing a sense of superiority over people who haven't dedicated their lives to a single video game.

That being said. Its pvp scene will not be very active but it will be alot healthier.

I honestly believe there's room for balance in this area to be struck. Jorbtar could at least throw non-PvPers a bone now and again, we do keep coming back to this game for some reason, make it worth our while just a little bit, you know.

Remember when you and I started playing. It would have been in W7 for both of us.... remember anything about W7? Literally no KO protections no wounds just.... Someone finds you, you die. Being in a village was compulsory because sieging was so easy and the solo life was hell.

Compare that to now. We actually have been thrown MANY bones and now is a better time for solo play than we've ever had. I had to fight for my little island and contest claims all night when the world started but that honestly isn't that bad.

I am mostly just worried about new players that aren't well prepared for how to fight for their claims and contest land.

I've lost my 1st character to an herd of Aurohsen because I've pulled a hair.
I've lost my 2nd character to a bunch of polish jerkwads because I've talked to them from inside my pali while standing too close (the famous "shoot through the wall" trick).
I do remember, and I know that the situation has been changing gradually, and now it's time for the next "grade" of change.

The balance is shifting over time, players who hardcore-grind-speedrun this game did their homework, came up with best ways and top macroes, and creating a ridiculously effective ganker is way too easy compared to creating and equipping a character intended for other gameplay types.
No point in hiding the skills or attacks behind different walls. Gank-ready characters may be produced in bulk at a frightening pace anyways.
Therefore, it's time to balance the other end of the stick and grant another layer of protection to the "gankees".
I'm not suggesting PvE server or something, just a change to balance out the ever-persistent race between speedrunners-PvPers and quiet PvE hermits. KO is punishing enough as it is, and noone takes away the possibility of killing and looting a character, it's just gonna take more time to make a ganker able to do so.
All said above is my firmly held opinion, reflecting my subjective view. I'm not pretending to be the "final truth and ultimate judge" here, but I'm ready to debate :)

If you describe to me some details of the encounters you've had, I'll honestly tell you if one of those was me :)

jorbtard would be unable to make competend agressive and threatening NPCs that bring you to fear the world.
they fail at pathfinding for gods sake.

the "gankers" are you bandit npcs. they are the reason you build intricate wall designs, why every tour on a river in your dugout is harrowing, and why you dont leave the base with your farmer, the inventory full of subscription tokens,

the gankers are your npcs.

and you are theirs.

you even get a better deal out of that, they make your game a true survival experience once you found out how to cheese animals,

for them you are just unrewarding lootgoblins, giving them shitty nettle pants.
i doubt you ever reached the point where you actually give them building materials for cool chairs , or a mug.
