There are some differences that you cannot quite use the word republic and democracy interchangeably.

To shorten things, Democracy is more oriented by/towards the people while republic has some entity representing the people rather than the people itself. The United State being a democracy is a misnomer as the people themselves do not govern but the representative (ie mayor) do.

Of course, the information is probably going to be ignored in response of being called dumb.

https://en.oxforddictionaries.com/definition/democracy
Democracy - A system of government by the whole population or all the eligible members of a state, typically through elected representatives.

And I think that there are elections in USA where representatives are elected into government?

You are basically saying that sausage is not made of meat but instead its made of sausage.
Dumb.

What you copy and paste is a very basic definition but it is not just a singular defined word.

If you want to throw around dictionary,

The key difference between a democracy and a republic is that a republic protects the minority. In a democracy the rule of the majority party is complete and has no appeal process. In a republic the majority is limited by a constitution.

The Bill of Rights, the first ten amendments to the Constitution of the United States, serves as an example of how a constitution can limit majority power in a republic. The first amendment, which guarantees the freedom of speech to all citizens, cannot be overturned by a majority elected to the national government. The only way that the rights granted by the first ten amendments can be taken away is by amending the Constitution.

The danger inherent in a democracy is that turbulence in the ruling party can grant new rights to people or remove rights that people view as fundamental. This state of uncertainty causes the pure democracy to be an unstable form of government. By declaring specific freedoms as rights that cannot be taken away by a simple change in majority, more stability is created. The average person is able to rest easy knowing that no matter which political party is in power the basic rights of the people remain unchanged.

If you want to break down the word democracy further, it is derived from the greek word Dēmokratía. Demos (the people) kratia (power), power of the people.

In modernity, democracy is often construed as being concerned, in the first instance, with a voting rule for determining the will of the majority. The power of the people is thus the authority to decide matters by majority rule.

Even then, people tend to interpret democracy as both direct democracy (the people) and representative democracy. So it is not that the case that jacobian or you are wrong but both of you are right. This is basing on the merrian definition and explanation of the interpretation.

The issue is that you intentionally choose the definition opposite of his to try to throw an insult for the "wrong" information.

PS: I find it ironic that you are throwing around dictionaries but you only use the word dumb as a response.
Is there a word to describe people that try to bludgeon debates with dictionaries?

It is foolish to say that there is no democracy in US. Of course there is. It does not change the fact that whatever that republic thing was is one type of democracy and there still is democracy in America.
You are coming up with your own idiotic definitions for words. Just like unintelligent and simpleminded american would do.

Hello shubla. : )

As many people in this thread stated, Democracy can be interpreted into two forms of democracy:
- Direct Democracy- The people themselves
- Representative Democracy- The representative of the people.

The term democracy is not strictly limited to these two alone, there is parliament democracy and totalitarian democracy.

For clarifications, what jacobian means when he says the United States does not have a democracy is that he means direct democracy and we have a representative democracy which is also can be called a republic. From what he is sayig, the United States does not have a direct democracy. This is due to the fact that the Constitution protects the right of the people from the majority. Admittedly it is not a perfect system, nor is the democratic/republic government that the American people have but it does function to keep semblance of order.

I hope that clears up any confusions that people have been stating about democracy to you. If you have any additional question, feel free to respond or PM me.

Cheers! :D
