As many people in this thread stated, Democracy can be interpreted into two forms of democracy:
- Direct Democracy- The people themselves
- Representative Democracy- The representative of the people.

The term democracy is not strictly limited to these two alone, there is parliament democracy and totalitarian democracy.

For clarifications, what jacobian means when he says the United States does not have a democracy is that he means direct democracy and we have a representative democracy which is also can be called a republic. From what he is sayig, the United States does not have a direct democracy. This is due to the fact that the Constitution protects the right of the people from the majority. Admittedly it is not a perfect system, nor is the democratic/republic government that the American people have but it does function to keep semblance of order.

I hope that clears up any confusions that people have been stating about democracy to you. If you have any additional question, feel free to respond or PM me.

Cheers! :D

Jacobian said, USA is NOT democracy.
USA IS representative republic.

But representative republic IS democracy, therefore, USA is democracy.

Simple logic.

Hello shubla! :)

Yes the logic of the definition is simple enough that republican in itself is also called representative democracy. However when it comes to communicating it, he means representative as opposed to direct. He may not be entirely correct in a direct interpretation but neither is he incorrect as . After all, the original meaning of the word democracy did originally mean the mob oriented type which , later on, also encompasses republic.

It helps for me to have a flexible mind so that the two sides of the communication can understand each other and reach a mutual understanding despite some technical detail differences that both side represent.

I can confirm this looking at various websites and dictionaries (including the oxford dictionary you are using and the merriam dictionary Patchouli was using) as well as some other scholarly sources that I decided to look around for fun. If you'd like, I can give further information on the background of democracy, how it pertains to the United States, and how it pertains to Finland. It would help for an interesting discussion.

Cheers! :D

Democracy is way better than in USA.
In Finland, we actually have multiple parties and they actually have bunch of representatives on government. Of course there are few big parties. But theres lot of small ones and some shifts happen regularity.

I think everyone in their right mind considers the US a near perfect example of democracy gone wrong, but it's still a form of democratic governance nonetheless.

Yea I was honestly surprised Australia didn't score higher considering our foreign aid is pretty massive in the region, especially following natural disasters. All these islands are constantly getting tsunami'd or stuff. I guess nobody likes us because we don't just let every tom, dick and harry into the country.

I bet thats what you find from the dictionary as well!
We have so many problems in Finland. Such as.
Refugees, immigrants. If we can change them to ash.
We might become one of the good countries soon.
Today I saw someone on the street begging for money.
Truth is that she is criminal. I kicked his bucket off where she was collecting money.
