I personally enjoy what Space Engineers has to offer. There are some threats, but nothing like Dwarf Fortress. I haven't tried multiplayer on it too deeply, but the PvP seems like it is lacking. I haven't played around with it since the planets update, though, as at that point it will no longer run on my system (needs a new gpu and more ram).
If you do like this sort of game, check out
Empyrion. You start off with an escape pod and a space suit crash landed on a hostile planet. PvP can get pretty intense, or you can go full co-op a la Don't Starve Together. I'd post some screenshots, but I'm at min spec and everything looks like utter shit (but at least it runs at a playable frame rate). The only thing that keeps this one from going full on MMO is the hardware bottlenecks in the servers. Otherwise, there's some pretty solid dedicated servers that play almost like EVE if you were to limit the game to a single system and a few dozen players.
