Well ... litteral it's the best sandbox/crafting MMO out there right now where we have a free roaming/building world. I cannot see a better one with this kind of freedom.
Wurm is too old and cluncky, Lif is crap ( at least to me) ... all the others are instanced or not really sandbox games ( aka Albion, Black desert et similiar) , not sure about runescape cause never played that.

After it's all over, I'm surprised Perpetuum is on there, but not EVE. The only difference is that one is on a planet with mechs, and the other is in space with ships the size of a small moon. That Ultima got more votes than Darkfall despite the former being almost dead. (Must have been the nostalgia vote?)

I'm also surprised A Tale in the Desert only got 3 votes. I love this crafting game. Sure, it's grindy, but they have a botting policy that at least allows you to manage the really bad tasks with some sanity (such as growing flax and wheat). The player created art and puzzles are amazing, the the building competitions can just astound. My only problem is it is yet another game with a monthly sub that I can't afford. If it weren't for my continued dedication to Haven, this game would have gotten my vote (or EVE if it had been on the list).

But then again, this is a blog about sandbox games with a few thousand readers. I can't expect something like this to be widely viewed and accurate of actual popularity or quality in a voting contest. Definitely have the blog bookmarked now, though. Thanks for the share, viznew!

Darkfall Unholy Wars has been shut down (cryeverytiem) but there are two versions of the original Darkfall running at the moment.
Rise of Agon (currently live) and New Dawn (release soon?).

RoA had the benefit of being first out of the gates but as a result they had a horrible launch with crashes and lags. It's been fixed for the most part now but the original nostalgia is gone for a lot of people. RoA has hopped on to the quality of life train lately and so they've reduced grind significantly and improved fast travel which I feel is a step in the right direction considering no new player can be fucked to deal with the original grind and clunky UI that the game had.

New Dawn seems to be taking its time to get going but they have some core gameplay changes in the works such as local banking (which is a shit concept that has killed the game for me without it even being released)
