Latitude. The western US is a hot, semi arid environment, whilst Russia is not.

Typical northern california alpine forest @ about 5000ft in elevation. I've hiked and hunted deer on this very section of forest.

The low bushes along the trail are resistant to drought - Toyon berry (bears eat tons of these berries and their shit piles are huge) and manzanita.



That would be a small pile of bear scat. Some piles would nearly fill a average size plastic grocery bag.

I remember that a few years ago there were so many wildfires in Russia that you could smell and see the smoke in Helsinki, hundreds of kilometers away from Russia.

I like places where smoking is forbidden everywhere and instead of no-smoking areas, there are smoking-allowed areas, because its not allowed anywhere.
