Nobody is going to use Matrix because it's a shit communication platform. It doesn't matter what license it's developed under, who owns the servers or which protocol it uses because those are not problems that people have with their communication platforms. Most people want their tools to serve them. Switching to a less popular, more feature poor platform would be them serving their tools.

IRC is just as easy to access as Discord, if not easier. There's even a few phone apps that will connect you to your favorite server with little more effort than connecting to anything Discord related. There's also voice plug-ins and file sharing available with the right IRC tools. What you don't get are in-line image and video posts... but do you really need those unless you're on a phone that can't flip between a browser and another app? (Reason #18 why smartphones generally suck.)

@Zen: Yes, I've Hel'd or locked more than a few posts like that in the past... but did I ban the poster? Not usually unless they're spamming or otherwise being a total asshole at the time. Also, I've only seen a handful of posts for public Discord channels. Someone posted a few once a year or two ago, and then there was another attempt to try to organize some, and then this. And I'll applaud anyone that tries to build a community, whether it's a community of trolls, jokers, serious thinkers, or just lazy ass bums. So take your shit attitude and choke on it.

I mean, you make it pretty clear that dealing with forum posts at the incredibly slow rate that they come in is a big chore.
I'm pretty sure that everybody would agree that you would act differently in a live chat where a ranting lunatic can post 50 messages a minute.
It's very unrealistic to assume that anybody would sit there and delete (Hel) messages in a chat as fast as they can be made by somebody who needs to be forced to calm down or stop their rant.

Most importantly, it is decentralized, not beholden to a single entity, uses a standardized, open protocol, has open-source implementations (client- and server-wise), and among those implementations are ones that don't run in a web browser.

What value do the mods add to the forums anyway... If I would be a moderator, I would be the moderator of moderators, moderating only the moderator actions to keep their petty moderation in check.

I think the devs should not bother with any chat programs at all. It is just a channel for shitters with their shitty ideas and noise. Keep the clutter out of their heads, they are actually producing value to the world and have no time for consumers trying to push their stupid shit in devs faces. It is very dangerous for their creativity.
