Hint: alot of blame is because of the influence on devs from the people that want to turn the game into peaceful farming game with overcomplicated mechanics and it has been slowly losing the concept of harsh permadeath game over all this time which has always been the main appeal of the game
When thinking back I do sometimes wonder how much influence brick bashing (and to a lesser extent hand bashing pali) had on the overall state of criminal activity. I agree in many aspects the general environment was harsher, but that goes both ways and criminals also had to be more careful about the crimes they actually committed because of the fact that a major faction may eventually take notice or receive a request for help and come along to knock on the door at any point in time. On the flip side of that though a brick basher was essentially a valuable asset for a faction given the significant amount of investment and bringing them out did pose the risk of losing that thus making it necessary to ensure their protection.
Fundamentally I think hand bashing was and is a bad mechanic in general, but it's interesting to consider the effects such mechanics were having at the time.
