But simplicity shouldn't be as objective as steelmaking is right now. If you have wrought iron, a steel crucible, and wood - you can make steel right now. But if you can't beat the timegate or can't participate due to worldly constraints, you just can't have steel.

That being said I do like Wolf's suggestion - it's blunt but fixes the timegate problem somewhat. But it's still gated behind just as much time. 25 loads could have been done end-to-end since the world started. It's silly.
