"Grow up kid" isn't a meme, but saying it to anyone in a non-sarcastic way is pretty immature imo.

As for contributing to this topic in some fashion, I'd say death is the big motivator here. Some people like inherently big risks in their games, and permadeath is one of the biggest risks you can have in a game. I know I've gotten close to dying in this game a ton of times before, and I'd say it's an adrenaline rush/almost horror to find yourself at death's doorstop (being chased by a bear or high level character.)

It also provides incentive to progress through the game. Don't want to be bullied by big animals/other people? Get more materials and claim larger chunks of land. Strength in numbers, right? One of the best ways to protect yourself in this game is to found a village and have multiple people helping eachother get better in the game. Thus the MMO aspect comes through. Hermits are still viable, because they're small enough to not be worth a big village's time, and as such aren't the targets of big raids. You might have the occasional single raider/thief but it's really not that hard to start over again (especially since they changed clay from legacy.)
