H & H Discord?

Not to be needlessly confrontational, but if we're at the point where we're urging each other to reconsiderations, then I too urge you to reconsider your use of Discord, frankly. I mean, let me just put it out there, that while you seem to consider it a major imposition to force people out of Discord. I consider it a major imposition to force people into Discord.

Hey Loftar, just to fill you in on some basics of setting up a server for riot (the one you linked was set to invite only which for some reason I think is the default? you should set a custom invite link in the settings, though) here's some small documents to get you started, should you pursue a riot setup. It would be a miracle if it got to 10% of the size of the largest Haven discord server, considering the lack of gaming related content on riot as it being a mostly programming or Linux or cryptocurrency related libertarian security-minded miniscule alternative.

I had the sudden urge the other day to google this old game I used to play. Tried to look for a discord link to join in and chat with old friends. I thought there sure have to be an official server around and stumbled across this thread. Low and behold I had forgot how stubborn haven devs were till I red this thread. I don't know what the allergy's about growing this game is or why discord is so evil as to prevent paying customers to find there way to haven. Such shame, if I was in the chatroom about haven I would have been inform about the world reset given I use discord daily and am in many chat rooms. Haven for sure would have been one of them if there was a haven discord and probably would have found myself to spend a bit to play in the new world. But as I rather not join a randoms discord server and rather be in an official one where everyone is in then I'll just read this forum and leave as I have done from time to time.

Wise is the man who informs the risk of a product but leave the choices to the customers. With a bit of knowledge any security risk can be avoided, that includes discord.

For you loftar I recommend this link. It's an hour long video but I would scroll to around the 15 min mark and watch this gamedev talk about this popular app everyone keeps using. You might not have the time to watch it but it might help convince you if you do.

the 0day was patched. still kinda moot tho as windows itself is still vulnerable to new forms of the attack. Shit even your CPU can be compromised these days.....

As for privacy. That is wholly a myth, and barely existed at all even before the internet came around. Every site I can think of that has a TOS agreement. its either you say yes or you cant use it. Did you know it would take more than a full work week to read the TOS for each site you commonly use in one day? Amazons TOS alone takes over 9 hours to read aloud. Privacy is dead. There will always be someone of something tracking what you do and there is nothing you can do about it.

I have dealt with identity theft before its not fun and its changed the way I live for sure. I was compromised when the Office of personnel management got cleaned out. it wasn't any social site or payment site I used it was the gov's data they had. I keep my money in a safety deposit box, I also convert a good portion to crypto which I keep on my ledger nano. Crypto isn't at the point to replace cash though. I got stuck at an airport once had to use a sign saying will trade bitcoin for ticket home.

Anyway you said you would rather have players take care of running a service like this. maybe HH would be willing to change the server name to Haven and Hearth. and run it as a semi official server which is mostly is at this point and tossing a link up in a sticky somewhere and leaving it at that.

Hey, it's rude to Jorb to toss him in with the likes of me. I have a general allergy to using third-party platforms, which extends also to such things as Facebook and Twitch (if I were doing a stream, I'd more likely host an ffmpeg server and let people watch with their RTSP clients, and enjoy my zero viewers), which Jorb uses at least semi-regularly.

I don't quite understand. If you dislike the Windows Store, what then is this packaged client that you think would be a good thing? Is the current client not packaged?

the windows appstore is garbage.

as for packaged maybe I don't really know what that means. you know something that you DL and it just runs without having to go through the extra steps of downloading and installing java. Maybe stick them together so its done at the same time?

Right. As it turns out, we may have to do something like that quite soon, seeing as how Oracle is discontinuing Java Web Start. Not entirely sure yet what we're going to do; one of the things I enjoy about java Web Start is having only one file to download so that you don't have to go through a "please choose the client for your particular operating system" step, which is what allows us to have the "Play" one-click link at the top of the page. I know it is a bit of an imposition to have to download Java first in order to use that feature, but I still consider it worth that. I'm currently ogling GetDown as a replacement for JavaWS, and one of the features that it offers is compiling self-contained executables for various operating systems, so I'm a bit torn between using that, or just offer a Jar file instead of a JNLP file going forward. I do think it would be a shame to lose the Play button.

Very well put, I agree with this statement completely and I think a 'Official Discord' Server would be very health for the game. If Jorbtar don't want to make an 'Official' discord server I think, some upstanding member(s) of the community should make a fan 'Official' discord server that we could use in its place. Kinda like how the old skype chats worked. Give different people moderator so not one faction/village has full control.
