I have wached A LOT of animes (15+ series!) and as an expert, I can tell that Naruto, Bleach, One Piece, Fairy Tail and Sword Art Online are must watch masterpieces.

Well, I don't think anyone claimed to have watched One Piece completely.

I marathoned from episode 1 to 654 a while back, didn't even skip any of the filler, was kind of new to anime and had lots of time on my hands :P

Nowadays I end up dropping most shows after 1-3 episodes because they're all so unoriginal and boring.

For fans of Attack On Titan, there's a new series from the same studio and director airing right now called 'Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress'. It's been pretty well-received so far, and its most common criticism is that it's too much like Attack On Titan. You should consider checking it out.

My personal favorite series is probably Welcome to the NHK (NHK ni Youkoso!), a black comedy/drama series about a complete failure in life who dropped out of college and is so afraid of social interaction he doesn't have the courage to leave his room during the day anymore. It tackles some serious social issues through a thick layer of black comedy.

Honorable mention goes to Durarara!!, which is a huge clusterfuck (in a good way) of crazy people doing their own things and constantly affecting each other by doing so, leading to really complex and chaotic situations.

Ysh wrote:Attack on Titan. I hear this one was good at the start gates, but ended with badness. You think it will be worth to watch it?

I also dropped it at some point during the second half of the series, as it really slows down and become less exciting there. But the start of it is definitely worth watching.

loftar wrote:All 677 episodes? Really?

There are plenty of people that have. My brother has watched every single episode of One Piece (plus every movie). I personally watched every single episode of Dragon Ball Z when it originally aired over here (so the cut version). When you don't watch much else it's not that hard to watch tons of episodes of a single series.

Also this. I cannot recommend it enough.

Literally babby's first shota trap porn. Highly overrated.

Acefirebird wrote:There's no overarching plot line besides, "go find the magic special treasure; oh and also there's mean people who are also trying to get the treasure".

An overarching plot line is not absolutely necessary for something to be a good series. Particularly for comedy series it generally doesn't add much.

Acefirebird wrote:I'd expect a 6 year old to like this show, but nobody older than 11. Not sure why it has such a big fan base.
I think the original post wants content that's a little more... Intelligent.

Not every story has to be deep or complicated. It has nothing to do with age.

Acefirebird wrote:- SAO II

Surprised anyone genuinely likes it. The Gun Gale Online setting is awesome, but the story is oh so terribly bad. I can accept Kirito's harem magnetism as a trope of the genre, but no story should be allowed to get away with 'oh man I just remember I had this huge trauma about someone dying because of me that I totally forgot about until just now, hey I have a trauma just like yours, don't we have so much in common?'. I don't mind cliches, and I don't even mind if they're played straight, but if you're going to play them straight at least execute them well.

Overall, though, I find SAO to be a severe case of great settings stuck in a shitty story. I liked the first part of the first season the best as it focused mostly on its setting and not on its overall story.

Itanu wrote:How has Steins; Gate not come up yet?

It's worth pointing out that Steins;Gate was based on a visual novel that's even better than the anime, and is available in English. On VNDB, the visual novel database, Steins;Gate is rated as the second best VN of all time. If you're a Steins;Gate fan you should consider checking it out.

I'm not sure how much of it you've actually watched, but consider reading the manga.
And it really is quite solid relative to the other big three, if not necessarily compared to everything else out there. And who says mindless fun is a bad thing?

Big three is what now?

GenghisKhan44 wrote:I thought it was, Sailor Moon, DBZ, and Pokemon. But apparently Naruto, Bleach, and One Piece is the Internet's "big three"...

The 'Big Three' has for quite a number of years now referred to the three most popular shounen anime series, which are One Piece, Naruto and Bleach. I guess the term is kind of outdated now, with Bleach having finished airing, Naruto seemingly being less popular than it used to nowadays, and other shounen series achieving notable levels of popularity (whereas back in the time of 'the big three' no other series came remotely close to being as popular as them).

GenghisKhan44 wrote:Manga's usually better than the anime - usually because there's more and better plot. TV is filler - fanservice, monster of the day type stuff. IMHO.

This is only for long-running series, particularly shounen series. For 12-26 episode series, it's most often a matter of which medium like more, and in other cases it can go both ways, with some adaptations being subpar and others being far better than their source material.

Mind you, the first things that comes to mind in the quality debate are Sailor Moon, Ah! My Goddess (although the anime is superb, too), and for some odd reason Eiken (brain bleach please).

Speaking of adult content, if you're going to watch/play such things (fuck the sods who recommend Borku no Pick-yer-nose), I actually do have a recommendation for a good visual novel, with excellent graphics, an engaging plot, and even something of a "justice" mechanic for the side-plots: Three Sisters' Story.
"...the dungeon and shackles are already at my threshold to show me here and now my eternal disgrace. Only you can work the miracle to make life possible for a soul so imperiled by doubt, O Atoner for all, exalted beyond saying." - St. Gregory of Narek, Book of Lamentations, Prayer 1.

You are much loved! Love in return!

Maybe 150 or 200 episodes in, I don't remember exactly. Anyway I may have watched all those episodes but it's not really an anime I would recommend to anyone. If you're looking for something silly / casual to delete a few weeks of your life then One Piece does the job. It's a good show to just zone out and pass the time but there's a lot more engaging and entertaining animes out there that would be far better time spent. A recent good one that came out last season was Erased. It's got a 8.79 rating which is pretty high.
