I like that the world is smaller and that rivers are connected... but why all of them?
Last world the best way to move around were horses, now it's back to boats, riding on horse is pretty much useless as you'r gonna hit river anywhere you go.
Also there's no place fr the hermits to hide, it's possible to reach any place in less than 5 min after you leave your boat.
Couldn't you mix both kinds of map generation? Like 2-3 separate river systems and great plains between them? So i could choose if i want to live in the river world or plains.
You could even divide the rare resources between them so players living at plains would trade with those living near the rivers.

Well, if they bring in an email system that tells people monthly about whats going to happen..... then tell people about map expand. They would probably get people back.

A huge part of haven and hearth is player interaction and more players in a tighter area leads to more interaction.
If the problem is that you're only having bad experiences with player interaction, the solution isn't to avoid it entirely but rather improve the mechanics so that interaction is more interesting for both parties.

Isolation just means the problems are hidden.

Pretty much this.
