Almost all of our radio transmissions become totally indistinguishable from noise after ~2 light years away from the Earth though. That's not even considering the fact these would be hella small and wouldn't have the energy capacity to do much of anything.

Sending out probes to other solar systems is nigh pointless if we can't communicate with them.

Steven Hawking and some other guy thought it was a good enough idea to spend one hundred million dollars on. I'm sure that they've considered how to get the data to earth.

A million dollars is nothing as far as R&D goes for space exploration. Space sucks. We'd be pretty lucky if anything made it 20 years going at 20% the speed of light without being blown to bits after hitting a micro-meteor or some dust along the way.
