Stupidity is a large part of poverty in western culture. People born into a different class can end up poor by being stupid. That isn't their kids fault though even though they end up paying for it their whole lives.

If you take recreational finances away from poor people would not the unfortunate reality be that they would quickly occupy themselves by whatever nefarious activities which could supply them with the finances to or other means of gaining entertainment. Crime would increase. Actually crime would probably decrease if you paid poor people even more welfare, especially from generation to generation.

I think the reality is that in the future most people will be on welfare, only a few will have jobs and most jobs will be almost fully automated. Really if there wasn't already so much automation nobody would be able to be unemployed. I think this is just a painful transition period between the time when you could work for what you wanted and a time where most people get given a stipend from the government. How we treat our poor now will evolve into how we treat them leading into a time when corporations own everything and jobs are limited.

There are a lot of things killing human civilization, among the least of which is video games.

I do think that with the incredible advances in virtual reality technology that we will see in the next 10-20 years, people will be even more inclined to get sucked into video game worlds, and I will most likely be among them. We are probably still several years out from the first quality VRMMO being released, but that will be a killer.

in 10-20 years, we're going to get rid of monitors and keyboards and just have direct neural interfaces for interacting with our computers. They've already created cybernetic eyes and ears. We already have means of controlling input systems with thought alone, no need for mice, keyboards, etc. The nanotech to make this possible is developing nicely.

jalpha has it right. As we get more advanced, we'll need fewer and fewer workers. Get over it. Quit hogging all the work so I can have a job, too, and have something to do other than sit around and play video games all day. Maybe I can get my student loans from my useless college education paid off and pass some wealth on to my children when I die.
Opinions expressed in this statement are the authors alone and in no way reflect on the game development values of the actual developers.

I have no idea why society is so resistant to the idea of a shorter working week. There seems to be a lot of advantages but nobody has pushed it forward, perhaps it is because of inherent human greed.

I just had a look at google maps for the area where i grew up in the 1960/70ties ... where i could roam freely in the fields and woods there are houses and streets now - triple the size of our hood ...
