Wow guise rlly. Do you have to come into this thread to bolster your own lacking sense of self worth by attacking other people?

I agree wholeheartedly. In this spiritual void we live in there is no meaning to our existence beyond making babies and more money. They say philosophy is dead, certainly religion is. I wish it weren't so.

We're all completely irrelevant to the cosmic scale, and nothing we do will ever leave our miserable little mote of dust. Beliefs in anything more are nothing but empty fantasies.

But feel free to dote on idle dreams of grandeur. We all have to pass the wink that is existence somehow.

There is too much order in the Universe for the rise of a sentient species to serve no purpose.

What makes you come to that conclusion? How does the universe conforming to laws of physics have anything to do with people having a purpose? That's quite a leap

Sentience is nothing more than a product of our brain activity. You can affect how you feel, what you see and what you think via drugs and hormones. All of your senses rely on physical mechanisms. Where exactly does spirituality fit in here? What could a spirit do? Certainly it couldn't think, feel or sense if the brain isn't functioning.

A statistical anomaly in an infinite space.

Image

This is the Hubble Ultra Deep Field. It contains an estimated 10,000 galaxies. It was taken by collecting light from an area 2.4 square arcminutes (smaller than a 1 mm by 1 mm square of paper held at 1 meter away). There is an estimated 40 billion earth-like planets in the Milky Way, with a further 11 billion orbiting similar suns. So that's 11 billion similar planets per galaxy. So that gives us a possible 110,000,000,000,000 habitable planets in just that tiny speck of the universe.

Now imagine the ASTRONOMICAL odds we're unique. This forum is more likely to be filled with Julius Caesars than the Earth is to be a special snowflake in the proverbial blizzard of the universe.

This is dumb. You don't know the statistical odds of a planet creating sentience because there are no statistics about it. Those numbers seem large because we deal with much smaller numbers, but you just can't know how much shit has to fit in order to create sentience.

That was just a rough part of the Drake Equation. You can make it as narrow as you want, but you'll still end up with trillions and trillions of habitable planets. The universe is literally larger than you can imagine. Some estimates put it at 1 billion habitable planets in our galaxy alone. Some even go as far as 100 billion. Fill free to read up a little on the literature. :^)

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the drake equation tries to answer the question of how many sentientable planets there are, not how many sentiences there are. It again fails to consider the odds of such planet actually creating intelligence. And nobody can consider those odds, because we don't know them. We have a sample size of 1 when it comes to intelligent life.

Edit to edit: I think you're not getting my point. "Trillions and trillions" doesn't mean anything if the odds of life spawning on one of them is very low. "Trillions" is not necessarily a big number when comparing it to the odds of intelligent life. It only sounds big because we have no use for such a big number usually.

Hooly shit. It's literally ESTIMATING THE ODDS.

Haha, sorry nooby. God is real and he loves you and you're going to heaven.

Where did I imply god is real? I am not disagreeing with the discussion atheist because I'm a theist, I'm disagreeing because you are making a dumb argument. "I bought HUNDREDS of lottery tickets, what are the odds of me not winning it? haha"
