Which is ironic, because the change they made to gates/village gates is absolutely the best possible change that could be made to the system for non-pvpers.

I agree that the gate change in particular is ironic. You'll hear no argument from me that the form it was implemented benefits non-pvpers.
However, as this is retrospective - Many people already made the decision not to play when it was announced, which was not in close to as favorable a form as it turned out to be.

Also, let's not pretend that the game has not been heavily trending towards a pvp gankbox with no risk for faction gankers for years. Jorb ameliorated some of the harm caused by a single prospective feature. That doesn't really change the flow of the river here.

This is evidence of the huge role morale plays. Attitude, the whisper on the winds, and general consensus matter a bit more than what's actually up because you're right - this is basically what people wanted. No rage? Peaceful player? You can escape to your home. With siege not really feasible to spam anymore, and TPing on knock, the game is very safe. One person cannot totally upend everything with no recourse for you. Didn't really matter despite the array of voices.

I think a very big problem was that they launched with nothing and deflated energy. If world 17 doesn't pop off it'll be too little too late.

I take that back. Played a little more and it's actually pretty nice.

I am once again reminding you: the game is good, it's the playerbase that sucks.

We need more players. Better, more creative players.

full offense but if your solution to a game's problems is to "just change human nature" you're kindof a sillybilly and your words have no tangible value in reality

Human nature is the opposite of the problem here. Humans are imaginative, creative, fun - the exact opposite of haven's player base. There's a reason the aesthetics thread is dead every year. The game isn't boring, we are.

"the real humans playing this gaem that behave like the the real humans playing every other similar game are fake because I have some idealized notion in my head"

it's weird how frequently this is a take here poisonous mentality tbh

A decade ago, the community was great.
I don't know what the fuck happened, lol.

Probably it started to go downhill after the ability to meaningfully kill bad actors was removed?
But I'm not confident if it was added back, it would fix things. The community has been poisoned.

It's no joke to say that the biggest PVPers in the community used to primarily KO people and take their pants off and make funny forum posts.
The biggest drama was about vanilla purists vs the extent of botting.

These days? It's doxxing, pedo accusations, IRL harassment, extorting grandmas for tokens.

As Snail said, you can't change human nature. But you can change who the game appeals to.
Haven in its current incarnation is a playground for abusing, griefing, and it empowers only the worst actors.
If the mechanics didn't favor this, it wouldn't attract as many players. They'd bitch, moan, and quit.
But, over time, it's gotten worse, not better - Jorb is basically the old king Theoden there with Grima Wormtongue whispering in his ear.

This isn't true. It was never chill kumbayah we all love eachother. It was very cut throat for how silly it is. People hated each other (fake) like they do now, bug raids were the norm, excesses of belligerence buried in dead skype chats. We were much more awful as teenagers. Back then hermits got full murdered all the time. You can't do that now, or siege. Back then you could break into and raid everyone's place, and it happened all the time. There was a bug or way in always until now. Hermits and local players were more inclined to attack each other too. The pants collection in Vigilance's basement came from DEAD NOOBS.

the world is the same as it ever was.
