Why are there laws of physics? Why isn't the Universe a collection of dissassociated stuff? You could use the same argument again, chance. So random chance gives order to everything, a meaning, purpose and place. Now you want to tell me that everything in existence has a purpose except us. That's illogical.

Or maybe I shouldn't put words in your mouth ;)

I suspect it highly likely that sentience has risen (and in some cases fallen not long after emerging) all over the Universe. I suspect many sentient species have found a purpose which pushed them on to greater things than we have ever achieved.

I suspect our species will die here on this rock, and soon in astronomical terms, without ever having achieved anything of merit. Aliens will maybe observe our folly as our radio waves pass by their astonishing civilisations and laugh at us.

I can't help but lament the reality and inevitability of that future.

You're implying it's impossible to make observations about the universe because we are stuck here on Earth. I get the feeling you're one of those individuals that believes NASA and the other space agencies are only looking for green alien babes to fuck. But one of the big things they're looking for is the building blocks and other signs of life on bodies within our solar system. Hence the Mars rovers, comet samples and other data collection on bodies within our system. Using these bodies as data can help refine our estimates. You clearly have no idea about how they create the estimates of possible life-sustaining planets and then the chance of life on said planets.
And to answer your metaphor, if you buy trillions of lotto tickets, you have a pretty damn good chance of winning (that's more tickets than there are people on the world, FYI). We're not talking hundreds, but trillions in the least.

Survival then. Survival is certainly holding merit. Are we going to survive?

Everything has a very obvious purpose except the Universe and ourselves. That's passing strange. Open your eyes, an atoms purpose is very clear, even the purpose of a wildebeast is known and obvious.

No, I'm implying that implying the odds of sentient life not existing are low because there's "many many" habitable planets is dumb because the sample size of our sentience statistic is 1 at the moment.

If that's what you're into, feel it away

Yes, but this is because we have lottery winner statistics. It seems to have went over your head but I'll simplify it - the lottery is just a metaphor for the universe having other sentient beings. What I was saying is, if number of ticket = big, number of sentient = not necessarily big, because maybe chance for sentient = very very small.

Your previous statement seems to be in agreement with my belief in the futility of man.
But yes, I do agree that if we have one purpose, it is to survive and propagate. We're the result of an infinitely complex chain reaction dating back billions of years. If nothing else: our one purpose is to continue this reaction.

Is following biological robotic instincts for billions of years worthy of merit?
Who would ever ultimately decide what we are worthy of on a universal scale?
Are we even alive to begin with?
Can you even prove you exist at all?
Can purpose be proven?
What even IS there besides "the Universe and ourselves."
What is an atom's purpose?
Is an atom not part of the universe?
What are particles made of?
How can we say ANYTHING is clear?
Is knowing what a wildebeast does during the average day because we observe it enough for us to decide we know its purpose?
What if the particles that the wildebeast are made out of will one day come to create a force so powerful it will reset the universe as we know it?
Does this give the wildebeast more purpose?
Can we give merit to the wildebeast on this scale?
Are its individual particles part of its worth?
What is worth?

You're missing the point you fucking numbskull. We have more data than one simple point. And it's possible to extrapolate from what we do have.

Let me try another angle then. What have we done which is merit worthy?

Also willing to throw more fuel on the fire of the alien life topic by saying the chances of life originating here are about the same as the chances of life originating elsewhere in the Universe and moving here.

Some minds greater than mine would argue that there has been insufficient time for life to form on earth, however sufficient time has passed for the Universe as a whole.

And that, Zentetsuken, is a waterfall of questions I cannot answer. Hence this thread. I also suspect we have potential for a greater purpose than simply survival but that is a topic for another year if ever.
