I have a very close friend with an IQ of 148 and she finds life very isolating, as a child she was misunderstood by the people around her which also included her parents and siblings, it was clear that she felt and thought differently from other 'normal' children. Her IQ was not recognised or discovered until she was 14, idk why, and by then she had become detached from everyone and felt that there was something wrong with her, she didn't want to hear about a high IQ that at the time just seemed to confirm her worst fears. Consequently she rebelled and rejected any kind of outside help or stimulus.

She is now in her 30's, calmed down, has a good career and a wide social circle and on the surface appears to have a very good life, she keeps her IQ a secret and seems happy but it's mainly just on the surface and almost like an act she has developed over time, under the surface she has an almost insane hatred of the human race, including herself for being one, as each year goes by she finds it harder and harder to relate to the way others think, she isn't able to form close attachments to ppl and she has never been able to maintain a romantic relationship, though she has wanted it in the past, she doesn't anymore, she says it's like being the only person on the planet ... only in some ways that would be preferable.

She is ofc aware there are groups she can join with other high intellect ppl but she says she can't think of anything worse than being surrounded by like minded ppl other than not being surrounded by like minded ppl.

So it began with her feeling isolated and ends with her isolating herself, I can see why she says she would give anything in the world to be dumb and not have to think about anything.

Yeah, I like to think I'm normal, too, but finally learned to accept me for me. :) (I still think I'm normal and it's the rest of the world that's screwy :P )

I wish I were normal and could have normal, popular opinions instead of always trying to see through things, fabricating contrarian opinions in my mind and always arguing with people. I find myself reading books and absorbing more information that just causes me to have more and more unpopular opinions. At this point, I wish I could forget all of it and fit in with the rest. I wish I could agree with people more often instead of always being on the fringe, and just believe the most popular idea at the time, or even pretend not to care, but it's close to impossible in my head.

Think to The Allegory of the Cave. Plato makes it seem like the world above is so great, but is it really? It lacks one key thing that the cave has, and that's key to being a happy person: other people. Surely, the "enlightened" one who was thrown out of the cave and trapped on the surface would go insane eventually, simply due to the lack of human contact. To put it simply, I would rather be stupid with friends than smart alone, but it's really a choice some people aren't allowed to make, or a choice that's already been made and can't be undone.

I'm not trying to be arrogant here and say I have a high IQ, or that I'm smarter than everyone else, but this generally seems to be an issue I run into really often. Maybe it's just because I'm dumb and everyone is smarter than me. Maybe I actually am a sociopath lmao

It is hard in childhood and adolescence, but as you become more adult you become numb and cynical.

Interesting interpretation of The Cave Allegory. So what is this thing that is missing in the real world that is present in the shadows of the cave that supposedly allows a person to be happier? Man is miserable no matter his lot in life. At least with enlightenment one can make choices that can decrease misery, even if a person can't eliminate it.

Yeah, I guess I have made it sound like that but that's just my lack of being able to explain how another person feels and not an accurate description ... sociopaths generally have a lack of emotion, remorse, guilt and use manipulation and deception to self serve, as well as not being able to form depth of feelings for others ... my friend has none of the other traits that would lead to that diagnoses.

It's not that she doesn't care exactly but as I'm doing a terrible job of representing her I think I'll just stop there. :)
