Thread from over 10 years ago.

We have begun discussing the prospect of taking some time to fix "object controlled objects", a server engine upgrade which basically would allow for some objects to depend upon other objects in a more developed fashion. The immediate purpose of this would be to allow for objects which can actually be walked upon, which could potentially allow us to do things like walk-on-walls, rafts that can actually be walked upon and onto, non-pocket world houses, and bridges. It is a significant project, so it might be more than one week in the making. I'm not 100% that we'll go for this next week, but we want to do it at some point in the not too distant future, mostly because it seems like one of the more significant level ups we can give the game, but also because it is foundational enough that plenty of things could potentially come to depend on it, so it'd be nice to have out of the way.

How dare you call our beloved Hearthlings objects?

Jorbtar's attitude towards OCO is a good example of why all the programmers who complain about middle managers are wrong.

OCO is not content, it's an engine tool that lets you make certain things in a less hacky way. By their own admission when they are working on the game, they only spend about 2 hours per week on patches. They are going to spend 10+ years worth of development time to make a tool that they will use to publish 5-10 mediocre patches that won't meaningfully change the game.

But besides pvp rework, is there really anything that could really revive game?
This game engine in it's state in 2026 is a dead end however you look at it.

the early game is fun, the later game is where people fall off, for a litany of reasons

I guess you're right. Any time spent developing the game is a waste because Jorbtar are lizard people Swedish and therefore incapable of understanding what normal humans want.

Still, the novelty of walking on a bridge will be cool for 5 minutes. The best patch in the last 5 years will still be energy food not costing hunger. A patch that took 5 minutes to code instead of 10 years.

My point is just that OCO is particularly egregious, because there's a dozen <5 minute patches that would have a bigger impact lol

True. Early and mid game (until mass steel) is quite an experience. You have tons of things to do and even pvp is imho better at this stage.
