I specifically don't play this game for the PvP aspect, let's start there. But it is a part of the infrastructure I plan for. We must defend, we must prepare, and then, once we have a powerbase and a secure location, we can start building roads and other civic buildings and projects.

I play for the people who come in so I can help new people get situated (Give me back my damn Charterstones of Yore, ya bitches), and introduce them to the great game that is Haven and Hearth. But I feel the need to say that what keeps me coming back is the building of communities and the stories we tell after last world ended and it's time for a new world.

I approve of the stat caps, but as I pointed out elsewhere, we need stat and skill decay to go with it. If you fail to use a skill (even through offline usage) that skill will decay. Your stats will decay over time regardless, and maintenance of your stats becomes a thing.

PvP isn't the heart of the game, but those who do PvP as their sole purpose have a serious impact on the rest of the environment. More than the bears and boars and mammoths, they're the environmental hazard, they're the barbarians knocking at the doors of civilization, they are Hannibal.

There are carebears in the world, and there are PvP players... There can be something in between, in many cases this game is limited not by the vision of its creators (a laughable concept at best) but by the lack of vision of its players.

Tired of the way the game is played? Don't bitch about the PvP players, they're not going anywhere. Don't join them in their raids and barbarism either. Build something better, organize something better, give people a reason to stay and keep playing.

The game and your village will thrive when you give it culture and a greater purpose outside the stat grind. Your high stat characters will always fall, and thus begin the climb again. But gone are the days where your opponents can reach heights that are unobtainable to you, the battle ground has been leveled.

Civilization, and Peace has always come at the edge of, or the threat from, a sword.

Quit your bitching about mechanics that aren't going anywhere, (PvP, primarily) and start learning to use the new ones to your advantage.

The carebears need a spine... The PvP players need a purpose... Find it.

Shubla: There are also other reasons to play this game than to maximize your stat gain.

Stat decay is just going to let bots win altogether since they are the only ones between them and humans to maintain and grow skills without input. I would daresay that you are going to lose a lot of players just implementing that feature alone.

There is a financial argument to be made for duplicating a different game. To my knowledge WoW was and still is the greatest example of this. They pretty much copy pasted Everquest, added in their own storyline and utilized a pre-existing playerbase. It's a textbook example of financial success in the video games industry. Although now everyone talks about WoW in the past tense. It's a pretty classic strategy Blizzard has used, and is the one most video game developers seem to rely on. Rebuilding an old and proven framework and dressing it up in their own flavour. Warcraft was a copy of Dune II, a game which itself consolidated much older ideas. God I miss Westwood :(

I respect the devs for building something original, it's pretty much the main reason I hang around. It would be a huge mistake though to believe they are the only ones working on this thematic. In any case the only mechanic I would ever have seen Hafen adopt from Wurm is already here. To date they have in my opinion very astutely selected the best core mechanics from other games in the genre and seem to have come up with their fair share of original concepts.

Anyway my point being that it's possible that eventually somebody will come along and duplicate a lot of mechanics from Hafen and other similar games in a better, more polished way which comes to define the genre. I'd prefer if Hafen evolved to fill that place but honestly the odds are against them and imo for purely financial reasons. To that end comparisons are essential, and comparing the artificial lengthening of the end-game PvE in Wurm to Minecraft where it's very easy to construct epic projects is something which can't be helped.

I think I know some guys, that were trying to do this. They are still trying now. This is the motto of of Salem - we make better "H&H". But tbt - they suck. I do really think that noone except J&L can polish their H&H ideas.
Maybe only Blizzard? ;)
P.S. More than Westwood, I miss for Bullfrog.

I am oj the fence for a world reboot, even if given some lack luster village life I am yet again letting the game rebuild intrest and then ill hermit in some form (even started a new character last week for this). If there was a world reset within the next two months, I will say the game world would have at least twice as long as a lifespan then this time if not longer. The satian and gilding change ensure it will be a different world one with a longer longevity then the current will have even if it runs the rest of the year.

Sadly my issue is one i have had even in legacy though, its more postive to hermit then be part of a village that quits...

The real question though is why did everyone quit?

Sure real life issues contributed, but most people pretty obviously just got bored.

Yeah, I noticed that surrounding hermits were getting more out of the game. Village life peaks after 2-3 months or so, then someone everyone likes quits, which starts a chain reaction, and everyone stops playing. Which goes to show that socializing is a very important part of the village life. I had no intentions of quitting, but Cecelia quit for IRL stuff and then I almost immediately followed. All but 1 quit within the same week. It goes to show that once youre in end game (given youre part of the majority that doesnt pvp) if you dont have some sick bros to throw down with, the game offers nothing. Most people are looking for that next challenge, that next feat. Quality only matters to a certain point before you feel the reward just not being worth the work(bots4days). The game is a 3 month journey with nothing at the end of the road. Of course the minority ole regulars will denounce that, but at the end of the day, they are kings of a meta that isnt sustainable for success.

So instead of people talking about "end-game", there should be some real thought on how to make a permanent, interactive, ever changing, world. A world that gives you obstacles to overcome consistently, a never ending road!

Herzog 2 (for Sega Megadrive/Genesis) was the first ...
