Everything you need to know about taming.

Thanks to the mighty Jorb, I can now tell everyone what they need to know about taming. Taming is a process that is supposed to happen over a course of a few days. Now the cow does not actually aggro you. Once the cow takes a fighting stance(starts wobbling looking like it is dizzy), is when YOU actually aggro it! As long as you have a cow tied to the hitching post, it will not despawn. I have tested if you can use 1 rope for 2 cows, and it does not work. So always keep 1 rope in your inventory for each cow you are trying to tame. I am still trying to figure out if archery works, so I will get back to you, tell me if you have any questions. Here is a short video of what it looks like when it is ready to fight. https://gyazo.com/e2d99b9f72ea47823eafba268dfce64f
*EDIT* It will take the fighting stance every few hours.

What type of area does the animal have to be in for them to take a fighting stance? does it need to have a trough nearby and a 5x5 picket fence? or can it just be a hitching post anywhere in the open?

Area doesn't matter, trough doesn't matter. It only needs to be hitched to a post-

What's the reasoning behind letting the animal exit combat stance btw? Since it's such a long wait, seems kinda needlessly painful to block off the same set of time multiple days in a row to get an animal tamed.

A window of taming, I guess. Seems kind of odd if you catch every animal you come across and then like bulk tame them every other week or so.

But maybe that's just a BS reason, idk.

The hitching post needs to be on stomped ground, and the cow will take the fighting stance every few hours.

Not 100% sure, but I believe after you punch the cow a few times it will give you the leaf in the top right corner, you then need to click the leaf to leave combat with it. To resume the taming you need to hitch it to the post again. Is this true?

What about taming a horse, how does that work?

All I have to do is punch the animal? How many times? Do I need a certain UA? Can the animal hurt me and how bad?

Can't tame horses at the moment.
