i dug about 1.8k units of soil today just by myself with wooden shovel for some kind of fort. it wasn't so hard as i thought, so..
and yea, i raised 10 point of every attribute exept psyche by eating berries a lot.

Really needs to be some kind of investment/specialisation in terms of manual labour. In salem (you can stop reading now if you like) you could make a custom set of clothes with made digging more efficient, and character stats helped a ton. So while digging was horrible early game, it got tons easier.
