Alcoholics United

Because Alcoholics Anonymous is for quitters! (Seriously, though, if you have a problem with alcohol, get help. It can be good for you and can taste great, but if you can't stop hurting yourself or others, seek professional help.)

Ok, PSA out of the way... After the off-topic discussion in another thread, I figure it's time to get this one going again. Anything alcohol related, be it techniques, recipes, favorites, hates, you name it.

I'll start off with one I tried recently: "Not Your Father's Root Beer" It's produced by Small Town Brewery in Wisconsin. (Closest thing to Germany in the US you can get as 90% of the state is, or at least was, German immigrants in the 19th century. Best Oktoberfest celebration in the western hemisphere there, for sure, and youngest drinking age... 14 if in your own home under parental supervision if I recall right.)

What is it? A dark ale with vanilla, honey, and other spices, and it really does taste like root beer... mixed with a shot of bourbon. It's 5.9% alcohol by volume. I'm not 100% sure on if I like it or not. I was expecting more sarsaparilla or similar flavors typically associated with root beer. It's very sweet, and at first reminded me of some Mad Dog or cheap flavored schnapps I used to drink a lot of when I was younger and couldn't afford better booze. I had seen an ad for it a while ago, but hadn't said anything to anyone. A relative brought over a six pack out of nowhere for new year's celebrations, two got drunk. I'm working on a third for now, so it has grown on me a bit. If you have a store that lets you mix and match bottles, its worth trying at least, but definitely one not a lot of people are going to care for enough to drink a whole six pack before it goes bad.

They also have a ginger ale. I'll note that this brewery is coming up with some other strange concoctions, too. It'll be interesting as to what they're like.

I live on the west coats of the US, In California. South cali in fact. I walk out and see Big Bear and so on from my front lawn. What does this mean. Beer yes beer, 2 large breweries in the city, 1 small.... and ya there is another but the name sucked to apically I do not count it. I am close to stone brewing as well (like 2 hours or less away). I have been to chicho and seen Sierra Nevada.

I am in craft beer country west coast style. Well there are wineries abound and many I have been to. But that is another post.

I also home-brew (or help anyway) beer.

Now if we say what type do you like, yes IPAs are a given. Hoppy ones are a given. But double IPAs are the ones I really like. Some times they are super hoppy, sometimes that have things like honey added. Its strong, warns to to drink it slow (at times haha), and gives a good buzz while being very tasty. The I drink a lot is Hanger 24s Double IPA (they are changing the name so, they do have an airplane theme well over all if its in the sky they use it). Plus Hanger 24 is like a mile and half from my house.

In truth I love all types of beer, most wines (some do not like me to well), and I totally love to death sake.

I once made an imperial stout, but the fermentation stalled. So I chucked in some champagne yeast.
It tasted aweful, so we had the bright idea of distilling it.
I made some pretty aggressive cuts, but there was no saving it. Even when mixed down to 5% there was a horribly penetrating bite to it.

It got me started making single malts though. If you ever get a chance to try a whisky with a large rolled oat grain bill, they are amazingly smooth.

I actually just tried this at a party I was at last Friday and it was very good. Kind of surprised me how good it was.
But, My favorite alcohol in general is my familys home recipe for Apple Pie Moonshine (I am sorry not going to share family recipe). My favorite beer is without a doubt BudLight Platinum. Favorite Whiskey would be Fireball Cinnamon. Not much of a wine drinker. Favorite Vodka is some good ole cheap McCormicks Vodka. Also drink Tequila using the good old salt lick lemon squeeze.

But, all in all, nothing can beat some good homemade MoonShine. If yall are ever around my area hit me up and I'll take ya to a real back woods party haha.
Check me out on Twitch! I stream many different games and it may seem my channel is inactive but that is because I am now restarting streaming! (Click the image :D)

Hah, a younger me is well acquainted with such a drink. Guaranteed hangover in a bottle.
I've since moved on to whiskey. I had a bottle of Pendleton and a bottle of Sazerak Rye over the holidays. And I have to say they were quite solid. The Pendleton is smoother, but the Sazerak has an interesting bite to it. My cousin got me a bottle of Captain Morgan, but I can't ever seem to shake that taste of cough syrup when I drink rum.

This dreadful ailment's heavy toll;
The spleen is what the English call it,
We call it simply, Russian soul.”

An idea to consider: Tedium, a Feature.

I'm not much of a drinker, I can't stand the taste of majority of alcohols from spirits to beers, when I do drink socially I drink Vodka purely because it has no taste, I use lime as a mixer and then you only taste the lime. :)

If I do drink a beer, like on a hot sunny sunday afternoon, sitting outside the bar we have on the seafront, then I drink a shandy or Budweiser, the latter being quite nice for a beer, it has quite a pleasant 'creamy' taste.

I quite like some of the pear wines, I had a really nice Australian one recently but, sorry, I forget the name. The most potent drink I've ever had was a bottle of home-made rhubarb wine that I won in a raffle at a charity event in an old peoples rest home, made by a very sweet lady who resided there ....

I wasn't expecting it to even taste nice let alone have any affect, I tried to give it away a number of times before giving in and trying it, lol, but, it was absolutely delicious and both myself and the friend I shared it with were 'tipsy' after half a glass, at the end of the bottle .... well, I doubt we were making much sense!
The downside was the worst hangover I have ever had that lasted almost 3 days ... don't trust the elderly, lol, they are sneaky and out for revenge!

I want to laugh at you Bud drinkers, but to be honest, it's not bad, it's just generic. Besides, if I'm not buying craft beer, it's probably Miller, so do I have room to complain? However, since I started drinking Sam Adams, Miller just tastes like hops-y water now.

Anyone ever tried Ouzo? A friend of my friend's family brought some to a party one time, and I fell in love with it. Just enough opiates in it from the poppies to kill the worst of the hangover.

@bubba: that's too bad, but I don't blame you. I've got a few family recipes that I just will not share, so I do understand why.

Not that it helps any of you, but I have this excellent shop in my hometown that sells beers from all countries and of all kinds. The service there is excellent, as they explain every beer to you in similar terms wine enthusiasts do. They even stick to the opinion that, because of the different ingredients beer can have, it is more complex than understanding a good wine. Love to shop there :P

http://www.getraenkefeinkost.de/ Seems it exists in other german towns too in case there is someone living nearby reading this.

@Ouzo: I love one after a good dinner in a restaurant. When I was younger we sometimes slept over at a friend's place whose parents owned a good restaurant and we always stole the Ouzo first :D

These are becoming quite common. We've had one here for quite some time now: http://www.goebelliquor.com/index2.html

I had Ouzo a lot when I visited Greece, although we would normally have it in shots while on a night out. Liquid liquorice, strange stuff... regardless, bought some home with me :D
