Why can you sprint on sand?

Try running through an uncleared forest full of shrubbery and bushes and roots underneath and you'll probably have a bad time. At least that's the case over here, I'm not sure about european forests/bush.

Forest isn't dirt though. It's long grass, roots, branches, mud, small plants. A nice damp beach is much easier in comparison, and much softer on the feet.

A beach may be softer on the feet, but the grip is a lot less; and you're quite likely to do sort of a "car stuck in a ditch" situation; You are running, but your feet is running into the sand, making you run considerably slower than you possibly could otherwise.
I'll agree - logically it's fairly dumb that you can run on sand.
