The pain of trying to help noobs ...

Postby enlightenedcake » Sun Apr 24, 2016 1:39 pm

I thought it would be a good idea to be kind to new players ... and so I created a small farm plot outside of our small settlement. I am growing different crops there and I always put our outdated equipment and beehives there as well.

First 10 beehives disappeared at once ... then somebody decided he/she needs to take all of the 8 pickaxes ... then for 3 consecutive days all crates disappeared ... not just the content ... and nobody cares to bring the crates back ... and nobody ever cares to replant anything.

I just don't get it ... you try to be kind and you end up with people who take away everything and who never care to even say "hi" ...!?

I tried a similar thing a while back and they kept bashing the crates. You need to make barter stands if you want to help beginners and sell seeds for an easily obtainable foraged item like blueberry. Then actual noobs will get your stuff rather than some griefer throwing it all on the ground or bashing it.

That is a really good idea.

why did this move from kindness to noobs to immigration to Europe??

Englightenedcake, I suggest having a rune stone sharing what you're trying to do with a contact HS so people can contact you if they need some help. Also Azgrid is right, barter stands are much better, we used to have them close to EC to put old items in, but many just grief, so we just supported people who were locals or through forums. Good luck though :)

I find the parallel between a minority of noob griefers ruining it for a far greater amount of noobs and immigration problems to be interesting. After all, it's the same thing - out of the countless people immigrating to our countries, a tiny minority causes problems which causes general opinion against immigrants to turn sour. And I feel the same conclusion should apply to both; we should not abandon the majority just because of a problematic minority. We should find ways to minimize the damage caused by the troublemakers while still helping those who need help.

I find the entire notion that people leaving their country for reasons other than war is a bad thing to be ridiculous, or perhaps rather puzzling. They are at our borders and are willing to go to great lengths to live in our societies. If we integrate these immigrants into our societies, have them work our shitty low-pay jobs and have them pay taxes, it provides great economic benefits and some social benefits to those already in the society. Why waste money and effort to keep them out when we can just let them in in a controlled manner and, to put it in a harsh manner, exploit them for our benefit?

Regarding our social standards of everyone working full-time being the norm being obsolete, I definitely agree that we (as a society) are wasting tons of effort without really achieving much with it, particularly in the case of capitalistic competition (multiple entities doing the same work that would be much more efficient if done cooperatively, while having to split the economic benefits). I found this article from 1932 to be quite thought-provoking with regard to our endless desire for 'productivity'. However, this is an issue at the very core of our society, and a change like this would have to happen very slowly and carefully to not disrupt our society too much.

On the topic, though, the barter stand idea is pretty good, I've also seen other people use it in w7. I never had good results with an open area with free stuff. Once a minor raider notices it, he tends to go back to the place for petty griefing. Maybe he also thinks that region will attract noobs and he stalks it for an easy kill. What actually worked for me was loading an alt with basic tools and gear and walking the world until I found some noob to give it to.

As a new player myself, I'm glad to see people going out of there way to help out new blood, but charity is a tool that anyone can and will abuse. Instead of giving handouts perhaps you should look into actively working with them rather than showering them with free resources, make them do the footwork themselves, teach them how to support themselves.

If they're too lazy to work for their payout, then they have no place among us.

One who wishes to learn is always of more worth than one who wishes to coddled to by those who can spare the effort and resource.

Place your efforts more wisely, either by working on your own projects more vigorously, or by finding another method to help those who wish to learn.

Sorry that you're running into problems.

I did the exact same thing in W7 with great success, so it can work - I made a garden area off of the village claim, planted crops and tree's and put excess livestock and old tools, equipment, etc out and it was used and up-kept until I left for the new version and w8, ppl replanting seeds, bringing their own old gear to leave and when I had to take some time off suddenly the locals took care of it without my even asking.

Occasionally someone would come by and take all the crates, lol, but no-one ever messed up the garden, in fact many ppl added to it and left runes to say thanks or to ask for particular items they needed. I enjoyed it and got to meet loads of new players as a result and a lot settled close by or in the general area becoming good trade partners/friends as they progressed.

I guess it was partly luck and partly timing, w7 has endured and by the time I'd completed the garden most of the griefing and wars seemed to be over and the world was populated by peaceful farmers and newcomers. :D

Anyway, good luck enlightenedcake .. I left runes there explaining the use of the garden and asking could ppl please help by replanting the seeds and with the upkeep, that may have helped ... if they hadn't, ofc, I would have stopped doing it. :)
