What Would Happen if the Earth Collided with Saturn?

Postby Burinn » Fri Apr 29, 2016 4:52 am

I recently saw this image on facebook that one of my aunts posted shared*.

I think that's super cool that Saturn will be that large and visible in our lifetime. But isn't that sort of scary? Like how can't we even see it yet when it's only three days away? Shouldn't we be worried that it is going to collide with us?

Still can't tell if trolling or literally retarded. Saturn will never look like that in your lifetime, if ever.

If we get close enough, it looks like that right now though.

We'd mostly be dead already from the tidal shifts caused by such a large celestial body being anywhere near us, let alone that close. We'd also be within striking distance of its moons at that point and any of them is large enough to trigger a mass or complete extinction event if they hit the Earth.

Huh. Never thought of that, would we even be close enough for that to happen though? I had to explain to someone the other day that the Moon causes the tides. People are so science-illiterate sometimes, but I guess that's public education for you.

I hope it collides with Earth and it makes me turn into dust, and you into dust, and the dust floats into the same spot and we become one together.
