Memories of Havens Past

I confess - I never really got into this game.
I'd always hoped I'd log on to see a stand-alone version released; the game was too easy, and modification would've allowed a lot of freedom to develop the aspects I think truly shined. But that's not going to happen, and I really can't get into the new artstyle, either.
So - I guess I have a peculiar request. I could dive into the Haven Vault, but there's a 90's early internet vibe to a lot of posts that, well funny enough at first, I don't think is quite what I'm looking for...
Would you tell me what you remember most about classic Haven and Hearth? The good, the bad, the reasons you liked it, the things that made you frustrated, or happy, or anything at all?

I specifically remember the art for purple heaths, which was how I found the game in the first place. They already have quite a nostalgic appeal to me, so perhaps that's part of it but - navigating the quiet world amongst them was pleasant. It was ruined by people shortly afterwards, as such things go; but that's life.
The first feeling of actually going boating, and having no idea why I was going boating, or where.
Wandering around in swamps, just because they were there...

Does anyone have spritesheets of some of the earlier backgrounds, by any chance? I might as well ask while I'm here.

Well, first of all, the game didn't suck. Second of all - the graphics didn't suck either.

Don't worry, I won't worry! I actually enjoy the humour here. I was pranking too!*
*But not about my statement, I also think the graphics didn't suck, and the game didn't suck. It just wasn't for me. I had a broken arm when I played it too, so, it was the kind of nature I could get to when I couldn't actually go outside.

i kinda liked the old haven because of the cool combat and the graphix had me in its own way and that it didnt require a real good pc to run it

Killing wildlife felt pretty great, which is a sentence that sounds horrible out of context, but it really did. I felt incredibly accomplished when I took down a boar, less accomplished when I got took down by a swarm of ants - to be fair, I was really experimenting on my own, so made a lot of dumb decisions before I understood how actually fight.

I never even thought about the new graphix being more taxing, but my rig is pretty bad. Plus I'm just a sucker for that style I guess, perhaps I blame old turn-based games and some shareware from late 80's/early 90's...

the most exciting thing was that you could fight back when you were heavily outnumbered and had a chance to survive ganks and that the fights lasted longer than 2 minutes, i hope jorb/loftar brings this back)

Yes... I think that's the best way to look at it, though even though I never got that skilled at combat, that image makes me laugh, then grin. Must've been a hell of a run, even if it did meet a red end for (at least) one person.
