G2A: The dark underbelly of gaming.

Postby Jalpha » Thu Jul 21, 2016 7:54 pm

I have recently had my PayPal account hacked for the second time in just a few months. It's pretty annoying so I did some research and learned some interesting things. Firstly there is a security flaw in many routers which can allow nefarious entities to circumvent firewall protection. Luckily there is a workaround. In any case it seems somebody has gotten in through this loophole and stolen several of my cookies, which they have then used to access online accounts of mine.

As if this wasn't bad enough already like some homeless man putting his finger inside my bum while I slept at home in my bed it got worse when I uncovered what was being done with the money these people had stolen. The money was being used to buy game keys which were then resold on a site called G2A. For those of you who don't know, this site acts as a go between for people who want to sell unwanted game keys and people who would like to buy them for less than the retail price. At a glance perhaps not such a bad thing, however the reality is that a large portion of these keys are acquired illegitimately and likely to be rendered useless by the game company they originate from.

This happens because people like me complain when their money is stolen. We make a lot of noise, go in to banks and fill out lots of paperwork. We threaten legal action and are more than willing to fork out for exorbitant legal costs over a matter of principal, even if we end up worse off financially at the end of the fiasco. So we get our money back, as we should, and as a result the games company traces the transactions and cancels the keys which were bought with the stolen money because they have had to return the cash to the legitimate owner.

The point of this post is to make you aware of what is actually going on at G2A and similar sites. Somebody will always lose in these situations. The games company may lose their money by leaving it too late to properly track the transactions and keys. They also fork out time and money tracking this bullshit instead of developing. The person who bought they key could lose if the transaction is tracked and the key is cancelled.

It's just crap, it's a garbage situation imho and the world would be a better place if people just stop using or supporting sites like G2A, who I am told have recently lost support from prominent streamers and youtubers, who no longer promote their company because of situations like this.

Bought a key off there once and went and activated it right away and two minutes after I used it I got an e-mail saying someone else attempted to use the same key. Haven't bought any keys from their site since then.

So it is your fault?

Did you use to have paypal on that "remind my password" thing? Could that have been prevented by cleaning your cookies?

Asking for my own sake, this got me worried.

It's pointless to play the blame game Ysh. Everyone involved shares some portion of the accountability.

I'm fairly certain it's easier to take cookies than try to sift through keylogger data. Not that it isn't possible but your accounts would be much safer if you don't store passwords and usernames in the cookies.

Sorry, I thought it was clear to be joking. Obvious you should complain when money is stolen.

Well arguably I should have put more effort into ensuring my PC was secure.

You can only do so much. At some point you are need to sacrifice some security for gain usability. In the case that you are robbed, you are still allowed for complaining I think.

Nothing new here. Tons of complaints since G2A has opened for business. Do a search on gamasutra.com for developer complaints. What makes it worse is they are a big sponsor of a lot of e-sports.
Opinions expressed in this statement are the authors alone and in no way reflect on the game development values of the actual developers.

I think it's highly unlikely somebody hacked into your personal router or something. Did you log into public wifi anywhere? If you log into public wifi somebody can literally see all your passwords and steal your cookies/sessions with a simple browser plugin.
