An empire is a multi-ethnic or multinational state with political and/or military dominion of populations who are culturally and ethnically distinct from the imperial (ruling) ethnic group and its culture.[6] This is in contrast to a federation, which is an extensive state voluntarily composed of autonomous states and peoples. An empire is a large political party who rules over territories outside of its original borders.

An emperor (through Old French empereor from Latin: 'imperator'[1]) is a monarch, usually the sovereign ruler of an empire or another type of imperial realm.

So multi-ethnic country can never become empire? Because they will never be ethnically distinct of ruled population.

An empire is quite simply a country that controls other countries. Then can be ethnic or not. A good example would be the British Empire. They used to rule what is modern day Egypt. Its is a territory that used to be its own rule that over time fell to conquest. When you take a another land not part of your own it can be termed empire. Multi-ethnic communities can be empires. It is more the rule of land not normally yours. However all that being said. If there is no native population on newly claimed land it can still be termed an empire as it would be a colony.

All controlled land is taken by some type of conquest. How can any thing expand with out become empire?

@loftar Old and resolved issue. :P

@Ysh If land is unclaimed it can become part of an existing nation. If land is purchased it can become part of a existing nation. When land is taken by force however it is an imperial conquest. There are a few exceptions to that last one however.

Allow me to explain things with a real world example. Modern day Israel. The territory is one conquered many times in history. The last empire to hold it was Britain. In giving up its possession it was determined two Jewish and two Arab states would be made from it. Well the time came for independence and one Jewish state formed its self and not other group did. Instead surrounding powers invaded Israel. Israel won the war. With no other claims or nations having formed all of the territory under their command became Israeli. That is an example of no government was there yet it was through conflict. In later wars Israel took the Golan heights from Syria. This was not theirs and it was taken by force, regardless of just or not. So keeping that territory it became an Imperial conquest.

An example of peaceful expansion would be the US purchasing the Louisiana territory from France. The nation who owned it sold it and a nation expanded.

It doesn't necessarily need to be taken by force.
