The Travels of Adder

Postby Adder1234 » Thu Sep 08, 2016 1:39 pm

Basically I want this thread to be an over exaggerated story about my adventures through the Hearthlands. I'm an amateur author, so I wanted to practice my writing and get some feedback. There won't be many(if any) screenshots and the story will be pretty long, so anyone who doesn't enjoy reading should leave now. I will add new chapters when I can.
Chapter 1: A New Adventure
As Adder rowed away from his former village, he looked back with a feeling of both regret and excitement, remembering the friends that he had spent so much time with. But that was another story. That was over now, with the villagers scattered and suspicious of one another and the king no where to be found, he chose to do what so many others had done; he left, in search of a new life.
With his belongings and valuables stuffed into the chest that shared his boat, he rowed. For hours he travelled, with nothing but the water to accompany him. In the distance lay an unbroken wall of stone and ice and it was towards this mountain that he travelled. Passing farms and walled fortresses, he was lost in thought, his oars pulling the boat through the water. Suddenly, a gleam from the shore caught his eye. It was a chest, much like the one he carried with him.
He was cautious, as well he should be. Bandits and cutthroats roamed these forests, but still, he continued, drawn to chest. Within it, he found a treasure that would prove to be imperative for his survival; a cloak, made from the skin of a great bear, the beast's tooth adorning the garment. As he threw it over his shoulder, he felt new strength pulsing through his body, pushing him forward.
The day grew dark, and the mountain grew even darker, until it became a monumental blockade, stretching for as far as the eye could see. Soon his eyes began to droop, and his arms grew heavy as the iron that made his axe. As night fell, he built a small camp at the foot of the mountain. In the shadow of this titan of stone, he took a closer look at his new cloak and wondered about its origins. Was its owner another traveller like me? Or a worker? Or maybe just a simple hermit? Whatever their profession, he was grateful for their unintentional gift. It was cold here, with icy gusts of wind chilling him, despite his fire. He took one last look at the grand obstacle he must conquer the nest day, before pulling his cloak around himself and drifting of to sleep.
End
Sorry this chapter was so short, I will put a bit more effort into the next one. Let me know what you think. :D

Well, it was way too short, which was disappointing, but also proves I was enjoying reading it. :D

I'll try and make this next chapter a bit longer.
Chapter 2: The Mountain
The sun was beginning to appear over the tops of the trees and the embers of last nights campfire were beginning to die when Adder awoke on the second day of his journey. He yawned and stretched his arms, still aching from the previous days rowing. Glancing around the abandoned hillside, he shuddered at the oppressing silence. No birds sang, no beasts called and even the water from the stream he had travelled the day before was quiet. Only one noise dared to break the silence; the monotonous, dreary moaning of the never ending wind roaring across the frozen land above him.
Kicking dirt over the remains of his campfire, he chewed on some blueberries he had found nearby. The sweetness cut through the sleepiness he still felt and he took a short walk around the hillside, wincing a little whenever he put weight on his left leg. There he had a large and nasty cut, which he received during an unfortunate encounter with a boar. With his new bearskin cape over his shoulders, his fur boats on his feet and his leather belt around his waist, he heaved the boat that held his possessions over his head. He began to trudge up the mountain, step after step, travelling painfully slow, but never stopping. The air began to get colder and the ground more treacherous, with cliffs rising all around him. He traversed these winding paths using the mysterious force known only as the "World Map". Soon the cold stone beneath his feet turned to even colder snow, and the few trees that covered the lower reaches of the mountain disappeared altogether.
He walked on in a daze, climbing higher and higher, distracted by the incredible wonders that surrounded him; spires of ice taller than towers, crystals that glowed with an inner light, chasms that seemed to drop forever and tubes of stone that created mournful melodies when the wind blew past them. Perhaps this was the reason that a huge, hairy beast was able to sneak up on him so easily.
All Adder heard was a great, trumpeting roar and the next thing he knew he was lying face first in the snow, a patch of red spread out from a wound on his temple. As rolled onto his chest, he saw out of the corner of his eye the beast that had attacked him. It was nothing short of a monster, it was the size of a house, with legs the size of tree trunks, thick, matted hair covering its body, two spear like horns of bone jutting out from its face and a strange appendage sprouting from where its nose should have been. Dimly, he recalled a name that he had heard used to describe a creature like the one he saw; "mammoth". This mammoth must have thought him dead, and if he didn't hurry, it might very well have thought right. As the beast left him, he tried to get to his feet, his head throbbing and his arms and legs becoming numb with the cold. Somehow, he lifted his boat over his head and somehow, he was able to continue his trek. It was getting dark and if he was stuck in these mountains over night, he would never make it out alive. He stopped only once, to examine a massive pile of rocks with a flag perched on top. His head was clearing now and he recognised the flag design; it belonged to a mysterious kingdom known only as "Beacon".
With this knowledge, he hurried down the mountain as quickly as his boat would let him. The fact that he was in a kingdom could be either good or bad, depending on the nature of those who ran it. With Beacon, no one seemed to know who was in charge, so it was best to move through quickly, before anyone noticed him. He had survived thus far by staying neutral. He had never been part of any factions and he intended to keep it that way, it was best not to be noticed by the big players.
When finally he reached the bottom of the mountain, he threw down his boat, lit a hearth fire and collapsed on the ground. When he was drifting into unconsciousness he wondered what kind of people wandered the lands around him, and whether they would be friendly or not. Little did he know, he would find out sooner than he thought.
