Cataclysm: Dark Days Ahead

Postby Jesus_Smith_Nandez » Sat Oct 08, 2016 8:32 pm

So after seeing the UrW thread, I thought I would make a thread for my favourite survival roguelike, to see if it has an active fanbase here to discuss the game or at least to spread awareness. It's free, of course.

Cataclysm DDA is a survival roguelike that takes place in an alternate future where the world has ended in multiple different ways. There are the main threats in cities, which are the zombies (including optional special infecteds), but also includes giant blobs, triffids, mutants, giant ants/insects, nether-spawn, spooky labs to explore, and more. One of the biggest draws of the game is it's huge crafting system and in-depth vehicle construction system, with close to a thousand crafting recipes not including optional content.

To start, the game boasts a huge amount of options for character creation, such as positive/negative traits, classic roguelike attributes, and skills in a plethora of areas. There are also loads of scenarios to choose from, professions to choose, from, and a huge list of optional content and the ability to blacklist pretty much everything that is not to your liking. You begin in a small building on the outskirts of a city (depending on your chosen scenario) and must survive however you see fit.

I very strongly recommend you use the newest experimental builds to play as the newest stable build has not been updated in around 2 years and in missing loads of content. If you don't feel like updating the game every time a new nightly comes out, there is a launcher available that will do it for you: http://smf.cataclysmdda.com/index.php?topic=11895.0

Oh, my gosh, i love Cataclysm! Been playing it for a 4-5 months now (Unlike URW which i've been playing two days.) and it's so cool.
Total misplay.

First ran into this about 3-4 years ago (found it through the "alternate games" section on B12 forums). Solid game, though haven't necessarily liked the direction it's taken the last year or two.
Opinions expressed in this statement are the authors alone and in no way reflect on the game development values of the actual developers.

Building mobile death fortresses is always pretty fun.

I usually play with NPCs off, and with tiles off also, hence my pics. Tiles always looks gross and out of place to me in a roguelike game where ASCII was what was originally intended.

I like ur mutations. My last character has full Plant mutations which is a pretty good meme. As it is I get bored pretty often once my character gets too powerful, even with challenging stuff like the event in mines that requires ungodly intelligence. Hence my current character hasn't touched a mutagen at all.

While generally I agree with this, Cataclysm is terrible when it comes to ASCII, from the horrid handling of cars thanks to fonts usually not coming in a box resolution, straight to the 500 Z's on your screen all being unique and different zombies yet sharing the same horrid dark green ~ blueish tinted green

Obviously not him, but I find that the game has gone downhill a lot in the recent years just because the developers seem to be pushing heavy grinding and tedium on players in an effort to try to make the game harder.

This shit looks autistic as fuck. Just looking at this hurts my eyes.
“We still, alas, cannot forestall it-
This dreadful ailment's heavy toll;
The spleen is what the English call it,
We call it simply, Russian soul.”

An idea to consider: Tedium, a Feature.
