GK's Filthy Fawning of "Force of Nature" thread

Postby GenghisKhan44 » Tue Dec 27, 2016 9:01 am

I bought Force of Nature for eight bucks off of Steam. This game, right here.

I have played it all but straight for three hours. It is quite good. I've got my straw hut up, a furnace, a well, a cooking station, and a small farm. It is definitely faster and more casual than Hafen, but I really like it. I never thought about how appealing it would be to go from nothing to cooking in an oven in three hours, but it is very rewarding to me. The graphics and sound are quite a bit better than Haven and Hearth. The crafting system shares a few similarities, though.

But most appealing to me: I am alone. No one will steal my crap just because I don't have a fence or a defensive wall. No B12s or guys in dragonhelms to worry about. There are goblins and worse monsters, but I can confront them when I feel like it; the beach is safe. And best of best of all: no internet connection needed. That means I don't rely on my shitty LTE connection to play.

I think I have found my favourite game.

Jorbtar, you have GOT to release a singleplayer version of Haven to beat this game. They've done superbly.

On the downside, though, the camera, although I've gotten used to maneuvering it, does give me a headache if I play too long. It begins to look surreal after a while, too. That, and it is difficult to navigate through the thick, thick forests with this camera. Fences are relatively expensive, requiring metal nails, which makes me kinda sad. And growing crops seems to be too quick, to me. Also, for y'all who like multiplayer, it doesn't have any.

Nevertheless, I think it safe to say it gives Hafen a run for its money. Don't give up Hafen if you are REALLY hardcore and good at this game. I never was terribly good, so I feel right at home in this casual version of Hafen.

I didn't get it after reading some steam reviews (already have enough unfinished vaporware in my library), especially the controls and camera seem to be half-baked.

But I agree that a local server version of H&H would most likely sell plenty on Steam, without bad reviews courtesy of griefers.

I don't think it will be vaporware - at least the Dev Artem is updating a lot and fits in player suggestions very fast - to me FoN was absolutly worth that 8 bucks already ...

Sure the camera angle looks a bit uncommon at first but to me now after playing a while longer it makes sense ... especially when fighting with iron knife (short weapons = less damage but faster movement than long weapons) and strafing a lot - thus circling around the enemies and being less hit ... ;) ... and the only attacks i experienced from behind are foxes which aren't that dangerous ...

Also the controls are something you really have to get used to ... ;) (i've been to lazy yet to set up a mouse profile yet ... with space /rotation/ on left middle mouse button for example)

Lotsa grinding is needed to fulfill the questing which is needed to level up and get more crafting and building options ... but as it's SP you can go with slow pace (while it has that good old "ah just 10 minutes more" urge constantly)

I'm looking foward about the ongoing direction - multiplayer is planned too for the future - hopefully with dedicated servers too ... :P

FoN reminds me of Zax: The Alien Hunter from 2001 with a slight portion of HnH Legacy

:/

I often wonder if haven would be more successful if we could set up private servers to play only with friends and now and then import the map from other players, including their bases with their chars turned into npcs, and if it also had a modding system that would let users create quests, events, structures and stories.

Also hello borka.

Not sure if FoN is really breaking into the market - not to forget it's in development since 2011 and is SP only atm ... and we've seen other "Survival" games had a rush in it's first weeks (days) after release but got low on their numbers fast ... while HnH left its big marks already and with it getting mentioned in "Survival" games discussion threads at Steam it's already somewhat of a classic milestone in the genre ...

And while i often had wished there where Dedicated Servers (private servers) of HnH i must confess that i'm also aware that it would be a "misconception" of HnH ;)

I've been looking into FoN, it looks cool, its rather cheap, and it reminds me of HnH without the mean people.

Yes, I agree if somehow there was a way to turn HnH SP/Pirvate severs it would be better, ofc, things would get boring ungodly fast, an idea would to be to add more AI, ofc, getting decent AI up takes forever.

Personally, I'm waiting for STN to come out for my next Survival game fix, its not even a bit related to HnH (With the guns, zombies, hunting, and cars) but it sure as hell looks fun and intresting.

Ofc, the Zombie Survival Gene is a very sore and over used one by now, I hope STN can break the ice and be a good one for once.

P.S: The 'STN' Im talking about is "Survive The Nights" (Weird name, I think they are trying to get a better one), which is a rather intresting looking game, if anyones intrested, check it out here: http://www.survivethenights.net/ They put up videos, updates, posts, and even a map for the island on there!

P.P.S: Im not sure if I should be posting all that here, I just felt since I mentioned it and in the event of curiousness to include a bit more info, sorry!

Eh, the controls do take a bit of getting used to. But they work quite well.
I read those reviews, too. So I decided to watch a video to see how it handles. With a bit of practise, the man who was playing it seemed to catch on quickly. Trying it myself, I did find myself reviewing the control keys about half a dozen times at first. But I picked it up easily within a couple of hours.

Still, spinning with the camera as it is can get to be surreal after a few hours. I was kinda disoriented by the time I stopped last night.

So I've played for almost 20-24 hours now.I wanna post some screenshots of my epic adventures thus far.
So begins the GENGHISKHAN44 EPIC FORCE OF NATURE BLOG!

My first day was spent building up my little settlement. The starting area is almost completely safe, and this is where I have been based for the entire game thus far.
My first buildings were the bonfire and hut. No clothes but my swimming trunks. You have to level up in order to build increasingly more complex or hard-to-get tools, buildings, foods, etc. So this was all I could build in my first few nights.

Image

Outside of the beach are a border of sunflowers. They demark the line of your safe, insular womb from the cold, hostile, toothy world. I had to squeeze out coins from the ugly, emaciated goblins wandering out there, using my first weapon: a stone mace.

Image

Next came building some rudimentary needs of civilization - a furnace and an anvil to make precious nails, and a well for my crops (not shown).

The quest progression worked such that I had to catch chickens so I could make a fried egg and bread (at the oven in the bottom right corner) in order to level up.

Image

My chickens kept running away, however, and, not wanting them to be the victims of goblins, I decided to invest in the heavy burden of building a fence. Those things cost metal nails, man!
But it was worth it to keep them from running around, and to keep me from running around - wondering where they wandered off to. (Also my first proper house, with a bed and a chest of herbs inside.)

Image

After building fences, a "dugout" house, and a few comforts of civilization (still no clothes!), it was time to begin the game in earnest. The first step to winning - yes, winning, beating - the game was to get a shard of the "Force of Nature", some sort of relic in the game world. To this ends, I was made to build a magical portal system to traverse the world. I've taken to naming the locations after Anglican hymn writers - Thomas Tallis and Orlando Gibbons to start with.

Sadly, I failed to take any pictures of my epic battles - probably because I was too busy fighting to the death with two goblins and a bear with a bow and a spiked club. I died a lot trying to get that first shard. But a lot of shoot first, swing when they get to you type tactics were just enough to get me the first shard.

And it looks like the business of the game here on in is to get more shards.

Meanwhile, I've decided to make my base more interesting. Or try to.

Image

one thing I found out was that, unlike every other survival game I'be ever played, items never despawn. You'll notice the "digging stick" in this photo. That was the first tool I ever abandoned. It has not moved for a long time. Upon noticing that things never despawn, I've taken advantage of this to make my fort look homier. See the cute little water pots around this well, for instance.

Image

Also, because logs really aren't that hard to come by in this game, I decided now is the time to build a palisade. As in Hafen, it's a long process, even with all this wood here. Unlike Hafen, I have not found a way to replant trees, so I'm not in a hurry to completely deforest the area around me. So I'm getting logs here and there.

Image

And, thank goodness, I finally got some clothes. I needed to get a couple of sheep, first, and expand my farming so I could feed them. This is their and the cow's new pen. Trapping is not too hard as long as you can afford to ignore the goblins, boars, and foxes that will, inevitably, come up to pester you. I just trap my animals and then beat the snot outta them with my new bronze longsword.

Now I am working on a fur coat, not only so I can look like a Siberian polar explorer, but so I can get the next shard without freezing to death (as I learned was possible).

I may keep y'all updated on my:
ADVENTURES IN FORCE OF NATURE!

Better graphics than haven? what?

Controls and camera are the worst.

to be a single player its pretty bad/short.
