Opinions and tips on finding a place to stake

Postby inlinebiker » Sun Jan 15, 2017 11:22 pm

Hello I have come with another noob question. I have read the H&H guides for the most part and one mentioned not settling down at the spot you spawn and mentioned a starting area but doesn't go into detail. I have gotten to the point that I can stake a claim and have gathered some decent resources and knowledge to start over. My question is where do I go? Does moving N,S,E,W matter? What is considered the starting area? How will I know I am out of it or not near it? Is it just basically with all the named forest spirits? Do I basically walk in one direction for 2 hours? I recently met a guy that said there are people out west from where I am that are raiders I guess. He gave me a brill. Then I drowned XD. Anyways I'd just like to know what is the best course of action as far as where to go. I know it is a common theme to not be near anyone. I haven't really met anyone bad..yet and the people that are near me haven't destroyed everything I have. I had one person take all my string but he left me with an Itsy bitsy spider, which in the long run gave me the LP I needed to get Yeomancy. I'm going to stop rambling now I just would like a little clarification on some things.

I usually do as follows:

  • Away from other people
  • Near a cave that I can claim so I can mine before I get a mining hole
  • On top of, or in proximity to, high quality dirt or water
  • Away from rivers so it's a bit of a hassle for someone in a boat to come snoop around or bother me
  • Somewhere that looks nice

What he said, but also...
swamps are nice too. being next to one is pretty ideal resource wise.
You can always dig a well, so no worries about if you are close enough to water.

References to 'the starting area' refer to a previous world where everyone was initially spawning in the centre grid of the world. So you can disregard that statement.

The one thing I'm going to say about claiming a cave: it's just like building a mine hole. Make sure to wall underground, too. With a mine, you got a bit of room already. With a cave you need to put the wall up next to the areas that can't be mined. It means extra resources to do so most of the time.

I will have to get to the mining part a bit later I suppose I have to do some more studying on the ins and outs of mining. Thanks for the guide links by the way.

Just look for Heath biome, it's pink on the map. Literally the best biome ever. Everything else is irrelephant.
“We still, alas, cannot forestall it-
This dreadful ailment's heavy toll;
The spleen is what the English call it,
We call it simply, Russian soul.”

An idea to consider: Tedium, a Feature.

Look for poop-colored biome. I think brown that is. Or should.
Lot of animals and string, you need both.
