Building everything on laid stone?

Should I basically keep it in mind to build everything on stone unless it needs to be inside? It is not really specified with some items. For example the Tar kiln.

Pavement reduces the strength of decay his on unclaimed land.
There sadly is no decay underground (so Poppycaps will most likely never regrow).
Some objects require certain surface types to be able to be built.

Bottom line: as long as it is claimed or underground it doesn't make a difference as long as you can build it.
Cupboards are an exception, they'll be destroyed by the first decay hit, irrelevant of being claimed or paved under.

Thank you for the advice. That is actually good to know that as long as its claimed land it is good to go. What are poppycaps for?

They're an underground mushroom/tree thing. Not sure which, but you can replant them like a tree, and the "fruits" are decent curios.

Sweet if I come across some I'll make sure to keep them.

Also you can chop them down and they drop several more poppycaps on the ground, like how a bush drops logs

I hadn't chopped them down yet. I'm watching some I have in my cave to see if they regrow. I'm hopeful, but logic says it's a pipe dream.

The don't. But as said above they are replantable.
Too old to rock-n-roll, too young to die.

I haven't even risked going into a cave yet or mining. Got mauled by a bear and wretched gore has me stuck at 31 soft and hard hit points.
