Older cartoons having lots of violence in them?

Postby Teleskop » Sun Jan 29, 2017 2:07 am

So i was watching power rangers ninja storm and i noticed there are UNIMAGINABLE amount of violence in the older cartoons - the power rangers literally beat the shit out of like 10000 kelzaki guys and also they act like bullies with punchlines like
"if space freaks make a party and no one comes is it still a party?" or like one kelzak is jumping on a chair and the power ranger asks him "are you having fun? well not any longer!" and punches him in the belly

nowadays cartoons are MUCH more pacified,is it good?

Why are you talking about power rangers (utter crap) if you're talking about cartoons? Cartoons are bugs bunny and tom and jerry and gravity falls. Yes, modern cartoons on stations like cartoon network, the major networks around the world, and you see in movie theaters, for the most part, have less violence... almost none to be exact. If there is some, it certainly isn't as dangerous as you'd see with bugs plugging up elmer's shotgun with a carrot or even his own finger.

However, there certainly is violence in cartoons today. You just have to watch the right ones. Pick a ton of anime. Check out anything from Cartoon Network's Adult Swim (Superjail is one of my faves for the cartoonish violence).

Sort of an unfair comparing. Bugs bunny and superjail are not same target audience I think.

If you have read or seen any of the interviews with the early cartoonists responsible for Loony Tunes and other shorts and comic strips, they really weren't intended for children.

But no, you're right. They really aren't the same target audience. Bugs Bunny and others were meant for mainstream comedy to be shown as shorts before feature films. Superjail is a comedic social commentary that is after a small target audience. Metalocalypse is another that falls in the same category (and another of my favorites).

I wish I could think of some examples outside of Adult Swim, other than Family Guy, American Dad and The Simpsons.

I was not aware of this. Still, when I think of word ''cartoon'' I think it carries implying of for children. Maybe this one is just me.

I don't know when this notion that cartoons are for children started, but it's a real bummer. The Flintstones, one of the first animated television series was intended for adults only.

Certainly a large portion of cartoons are aimed towards younger audiences, but in the past 15 years we've seen dozens of adult cartoons, not even counting family guy, king of the hill, or the Simpsons. Archer, Bob's burgers, and Rick and Morty are a few. That's not even counting the the rest of adult swim.

As to address OP: you'll notice that many children's shows which might have previously had violence or intense action have been replaced with more 'politically correct' shows. You'll never see a cigarettes in children's cartoons like you did in Tom and Jerry, you'll never see the protagonist bully someone. One show that does push this boundary is adventure time.

All great examples of shows that aren't targeted at persons under the age of 14. You might argue adventure time is for 12+, but I wouldn't put it younger than that. My niece and nephew, who seem to get some of the jokes and puns of other things beyond their years, still won't watch that one because they don't get the jokes.

My thoughts on power rangers, well are live action, well action. They try and trwch morals threw well beating up some space trash.... fun to watch yes, but not what is common now. It tarted when the good guys bullied the bad, cause well they bully back. The bigger stick set up, one wanted to ruin things, so the good guys got a bigger stick.

Now as have left are hmmm, adventure time, that gems cartton/anima (it blends the line), the DC and marvel stuff being made animated wise for kids and adults..... and that is it. power rangers is trying to make comeback but its not been the same in many years, its niche is now filled with shape changing dogs and crap.

But I better stop befoire I comapir my whole child hood vs the trippy kids junk that is now out lol.

Happy Tree Friends is a relatively modern cartoon.
