Graphics card crashes, but only in one game.

Postby Mateusz_Zboj » Thu Feb 09, 2017 2:45 pm

So I was enjoying Mass Effect 2 when suddenly something like this happened across the screen.

I thought my screen or card got damaged, but after restarting the PC everything seems fine.
Sadly the problem repeats itself every 1-2 hours of gameplay of this particular game.
Everything else seems fine, I can play other games.
Any ideas what could this be? Drivers, damaged vRAMs? I'm using a HD 5670.

I suggest to check first temperatures and power supply.
Make friends with the other crabs or try to escape the bucket.

Or, in case of a recent driver update, revert to the older one.

I am using legacy driver for this one, its pre GCN architecture.
Might want to try the community driver, though its slightly newer.

EDIT:
Yeah it crashed again at 70 degrees celcius. Temperature isn't the cause.
Also if it matters, the sound also crashes.

Just because it went away after restarting doesn't mean the graphics card isn't on its way out. Some component could be slowly failing and the issue might become more frequent until it straight up dies.

I will see if it pops up in other games too.

While 70 isn't necessarily excessive (I don't know what the ratigns are on this card without digging), it can be in older cards, cards that have suffered damage, cards with a poorly fitting heat sink or dried out thermal interfacing... so on and so forth. You can try to fix it by getting it to run cooler to see if it is the problem--try a bigger heat sink if one is available or better thermal interfacing; stick the computer in a cooler environment. Inspect it for other possible points of damage, too: cracked solder points, cracked PCB, loose chips.

Could be an odd error with this game alone and your card is fine. It wouldn't be the first time this has happened in the history of computer gaming.

I'll try using the Crimson driver, and no I can't buy another one. Can't find a job :( .

Nope crimson driver does not help, still keeps crashing.
I bought a used one, so that might be the case, that or I just had a piece of famous radeon drivers of previous era.

EDIT:
So I kind of started to manage the temp to go below 70 and created profile with clocks from HD 5650, it seems I'm getting less glitches and game didn't crash for past few hours. It reminds me that I changed the thermal paste on the card about a month ago, but left the original thermal stickers on vRAMS. Now thinking back it might've not been good idea. I think that maybe when the temp hits 70 on the core, the temp on vRAMS could be actually higher. Do you guys think it might be the case?

They tell you to never remove the labels off the RAM because of warranty. However, it is a heat issue. A good portion of the time it won't matter, but in that other 10% of the time....
