Polycentric Law and HnH

Postby cicerocf76 » Sat Mar 11, 2017 9:52 pm

Hi. I was planning on writing a small piece on polycentric law systems, and MMOs have been the best examples for such systems for a while. I have played HnH since the mid-point of legacy (dont think it was on this account) and i was looking for a few examples of stories of justice and judgement, be it as barbaric or refined.
Also would like to ask a few good reads of title related. Sorry if wrong board, dont know where or how to ask this.
Mostly looking for stories that prove that multiple systems of morality can work together and debunking the statement that anarchy is chaotic; also looking for examples of the Non-Agression Principle coming into fruition, and if such a thing happens, times where it doesent because the victim had no way to defend themselves, and what happens to "defenseless victim murderers".

EDIT: Would also like a jorb reply, since i know jorb is a man who stands for liberty and markets, and like me, still a nationalist person

TLDR: Writing something about justice, post examples of justice between two different groups with different sets of morality

This is honestly not something which happens here, anymore at least. Your best bet would be to sift through the Moot posts of previous worlds. Nobody really talks much about justice here, it's null and void as the concept is purely subjective and dependent upon the stronger party forcing their idea of justice upon others. It's just a cloak behind which a dagger is always hidden.

TLDR: There's no such thing as justice, only revenge.

Life in H&H is anarchistic. Where there is law, it's very sparse.

There's Emerald City, who takes the non-aggression principle you mention to the extreme, even when dealing with their own internal issues.
There was a case a while ago of a faction that enforced justice publicly on another player. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7ddSUdTVpPY
There was another case where an important painting was stolen and then returned later: viewtopic.php?f=54&t=48301

But I think the premises of your study aren't well suited to this context because haven history has shown that group morality doesn't matter that much. What really matters are individual conceptions of justice. So notions of justice vary wildly even within the same group.

Instead of looking for examples of enforced justice, it might make more sense if you try to determine what lines a certain group refuses to cross, and which behaviors gets their members banned internally, for example, walljumps, account hacking, murder of new players, criminal acts in general, fake personalities used for spying, threats in real life, scripting, botting etc. This way you'll get something more consistent.

The TLDR is pretty much the summation of justice period. Justice is an illusion of society to try and provide some sympathy and reparations to an injured party.
Opinions expressed in this statement are the authors alone and in no way reflect on the game development values of the actual developers.

Pretty much this, while there are some that do have some semblance of justice, most of the post that enforces is on their own behalf. And revenge here is taken to the power of n where n is greater than 2. Some of these grudges date back from world 6 to world 3 as the source. AD and Dis are still fighting, even if this "AD" (starting with world 7 I believe) is not the same one that had feuded with Dis a while back.

Yes you will have post that claims that they have dealt with the other factions that are killing spruce caps but in honesty, it is just an attempt to claim the moral high ground when it is just bragging against the enemy faction.

lold. You guys are speaking like all factions is actually 1 structure and there is a global hearthling rights thing happening.

Let me explain: justice is applicable only within the certain group of people that have agreements, bonds (alliances, factions, neighborhoods). A hermit or whatever without any affiliations and etc. won't have the same rights for the justice as the member of the group/alliance/kingdom/faction. They are nobody, basically. So, if you got killed by your own village/alliance/faction member, you can expect compensation from that person. If the criminal will refuse to do so without solid reasons, he/she will most likely be exiled/punished. Imagine that happening with some noob that has no ties with anyone. Would the faction sacrifice their own member's interests (if the person refuses)? Doubt it. Although AD were claiming that it was only Frost walljumping and etc., they didn't exile him, since he's acted against someone outside of the faction (and they didn't expect the devs to nuke them).

So yeah, justice is applicable only within the faction, if the harm is done vs the member/friend.
