New shards will kill old shards. Most players will just leave for a new beginning. And the most fun part of the game is when lots of players are playing and new people are coming.
The current system is perfect for the online that Haven got so far.

Mashadar's suggestion is not worlds starting at different times and existing in parallel, but one massive world (with one start date) hosted across several servers, with each server responsible for one part of the world.

that sounds like a fancy way to say dead game. 100 players isnt even ever actually 100 players because botting is likely more than half that population. i'm not sure loftorb were trying to make an AFK game with the occasional autist thrown in to spice things up.
