What happened to the beautiful graphics?

Postby AutumnPioneer » Sat Aug 19, 2017 12:44 pm

I've just checked back on this game after a year or two of not playing, and while i love that the game is being developed further, it's really a shame those great graphics have been thrown away.

3D is easier to update and make graphics for. It's definitely uglier, but whatever.

Im not an expert but adding 1 more dimension sounds like something that would complicate the making of graphics.

Think of it like this, a 2d icon is done via pixel art and repetition of the art in a movement to make animations, kind of like a stop motion. In 3D meshes, you make the icons by drawing and forming digital shapes, which you can then have move in dynamic paths to make animations.

They have not been thrown away but superseded by the 3D incarnation. The Legacy version is still accessible to you if you really want, see http://www.havenandhearth.com/forum/vie ... 39&t=40052 for details on how to play it.

Removed some flamebait from this topic, gist (without the hate) is: On the technical side 3D has benefits, among others that it is 3D so you have to create an object only once to be able to scale and rotate it freely (with 2D sprites this requires redrawing each possible size/perspective). Animation is also easier as you don't have to paint each pose (and every state inbetween) by hand.

PS: Moved back some posts (that were the ignition point of a little flamewar) from HEL.

Said what I tried to say but in a more simplistic way.

Depends on the tech level you're working with. If it were mid 90s 3D tools, sure, creating 3D and maintaining it is much more complicated. It used to be about a factor of 10 in cost in the price tag for 3D over the cost of 2D. Now, there are so many useful tools (and free at that) for making good 3D models and to manipulate them.

The cost in 3D tech is in environment creation. it's a lot easier to do a ton of static 2D drawings than the same number of 3D objects, even more so if your world provides full XYZ freedom of movement instead of side- or top-scrolling.

Reason: Fixed punctuation to make sentence easier to read (I hope)

The new version looks objectively better in almost every way, and I know, because I made them both, so there's that.
