RTS / Space Dogfighter Hybrid

I feel compelled to drop this game here, because it's the best game you've never played.
It's much like Natural Selection 2 (but way more complicated, and the GUI is unfortunately far less intuitive). One player plays as commander and makes RTS-like decisions, while all the players will play as the units in a space combat game.
Beware though, the learning curve (and setting the keybinds) are rough.

this one has a Permadeath item you can equip, the default item teleports your ship back to base

Allegiance reminds me of the space flight version of Savage, but it's several years older... this the first RTS/??? hybrid?

Downside: didn't dig much, but defaults to joystick controls. Too bad my old Sidewinder is no longer supported.

Unfortuantely, it was no different than any of the other RTS/??? hybrids in that it never garnered more than niche appeal.

I know some people play Allegiance with joystick. I've always run a heavily remapped mouse+keyboard.
The default keybinds are pathetic.
