Wild West RTS Games?

Postby Mateusz_Zboj » Sat Oct 28, 2017 10:59 pm

Sooo I recently replayed America: No Peace Beyond the Line, my old childhood game. It's pretty old, buggy, technically rusty, but it still had that unique atmosphere. You could play as natives, Mexicans, US settlers and even outlaws, who for some reason build ghost town esquee base, because devs didn't have an idea for an alternative mechanic for them :P .

So my question is, were there any other wild west RTS games? Or is it a lone example of this mix?

Well, you beat me here. I didn't know that there was even ONE wild west themed RTS. I had only seen a few RPGs and FPS games. Seems like I have seen some other strategy games set during the period (mid-late 19th century America) revolving around battlefield conquest, but nothing specific to what you're looking for, I don't think. (Several US Civil War games out there, of course.)

I think for most of the American developers, it's still "too soon" to look at this section of American history without some disdain for what was done and be able to make a good game out of it.

Well, I can't really say if they'd feel ashamed of it or if they just don't want to deal with the press over it. All I need to do is point you to the controversy over the sports teams "Washington Redskins," "Kansas City Chiefs," and "Cleveland Indians." It, of course, goes much farther than that. Just a reminder that we're talking about a country that can't get past its racial issues when all of Europe has for at least decades. (or one would think until you look at the modern problem of muslim war refugees.)

Sure, but again, could you make a good game out of the period? At least as far as RTS games go? We definitely have some good FPS games where you play as the lawman, the outlaw, the vigilante, etc.

American Conquest : Divided Nations is about american civil war and some other stuff related to events in that time. There is also American Conquest that gets you back to colonialism, you're able to play as native american tribes so I guess it's worth checking out. Then there's also an economice western RTS called Far West, where you become a rancher but dirty moves and alliances with confederates/unions aren't a bad way to win anyway.

Ahh, I also remember a very forgotten game called Fields of Fire : War along the Mohawk, pretty cool game. Make sure to check it out. As for America (the game), they wanted to make another one in 3D...

The producer was also a publisher and they made pretty crap games at the end of their career. Highland Warriors and Castle Strike were pretty bad even at time they were released. They probably didn't have enough money to carry on or realised that 3D wasn't really their cup of tea.

Oh and I almost forgot there is a DLC to Total War: Empire, that adds natives. But that reminds me of how much of a bugged potato TW:E was.
