To look at why I love how Haven and Hearth handles this thing I love, lets look at a game I play thats trying, but not doing nearly as well at it.
So currently Runescape working on two big updates to bring more use to skilling. The much larger of these updates is a nearly complete overhaul to the game's Mining and Smiting skills. Currently and these arn't exact numbers but lets say about 90% of the game is driven by combat alone and they want to change that to make the other skills more useful.
Combat has been so entrenched as the most efficient source of ores and gear for so long that reworking it now is causing a lot of problems for Jagex to have to work through. They're managing but people are upset that combat's benefits inevitably have to be nerfed some kind of way in order to give some of its use to mining and smithing.
Now looking back at Haven and Hearth, it doesn't have this problem. The thing I love most about Haven and Hearth is that it is built from the ground up for non-combat skills to be as useful, and in some cases more useful than combat. Because every armor in the game- every weapon, and every tool has to be made by a player this means that all the unarmed, agility and strength in the world doesn't do you much good if you don't have the survival, dexterity and sewing to turn that dead animal into anything useful.
Top end gear isn't just magically spawned in from killing bears and trolls. Some player has to skin that bear, and dry that hide and sew that bear cape. Or some player has to mine that ore, and smith that bar and forge that sword! The end result of all this is that you NEED someone with high smiting to be efficient at the game, you NEED someone with high farming, high sewing skill is important, the ability to mine quickly and effectively is important. All these things that in most MMO's are just kinda minor boosts or slight perks/boons are essential in HnH!
And that is what I love most about this game!
